Job finding in bad economy time<\/p>\n

The financial crisis is creating tough time for every country and every company. The job market in many sectors is reflecting this crisis with some sectors are more affected than others \u2013 businesses, finance, global trades, investment, and banking will definitely be hit harder as companies are closing businesses. However, the global shortage of information technology workers means that the situation for students in this field is not as bad as many people think. Economic depression will eventually end but nobody knows when, so while it is difficult to predict the future, having patience and creating plans for your career will help you to stay ahead in this uncertain time.<\/p>\n

Having worked in software industry for many years, I am pretty optimistic about the software job market. The U.S Labor department estimated that there will be shortage of several million IT people by 2010, even the estimate were made in 2007, before the current crisis, I think the estimate number may be less but the shortage of skill workers is still valid. Despite the crisis, both China and India are still planning to develop more IT workers to meet global demand by invest significant money into their education systems. Many U.S and European students who enrolled in other fields are transferring into the IT fields by large number and many universities announced that they do not have enough classes for IT students and begin to limit the enrollment. Based on these informations, following are some of my thoughts on the subject of finding works in the bad economy time:<\/p>\n

If you already worked in the IT industry and have a good job, there is no real reason to be panic. It is very likely that your company could overcome the tough situation today as business will pick up sooner than you think. If you are happy with your job and want to remain there, it may be benefit to you if you take additional trainings to strengthen your skills and bring new value to your company. If you are not happy, this is not the time to make any changes, you may want to stay until any uncertainty has passed. For the skilled professional with good experience, there will be many opportunities and no reason to worry.<\/p>\n

If you are students in the IT field, you already made the right choice and the right career. The important thing now is to review your skills to determine any gap as you monitor the future job market. Almost every job in the IT area requires programming skills, especially in Java and C++ but you also need to have knowledge in the concept of operating systems, telecommunication system as well as software quality, process and tools. Even you have not graduate yet, you may want to look at the job postings to find out what kind of skills companies are looking for and determine what courses that you will need to take so you will have those skills when graduated. Besides some required courses, there are optional courses that you may want to consider if they could help you in your future jobs. Indeed, certain skills are highly prized at the moment as I monitor many job postings that come across my office, I found there seems to be several opportunity for skilled developers in .NET, Java, CRM, ERP using SAP and PeopleSoft applications.\u00a0 There are several jobs posting on system security, enterprise architect, Data base administration, Data mining, and software project management.<\/p>\n

If this is your last year in school as you will be graduating soon and the job market has not improved, do not panic. There are still opportunities out there, but depending on your specific skills you may get an offer or you may have to wait for awhile since many companies are careful on any hiring during this financial crisis. In the interim between leaving school and finding work, you may want to improve your skills by enrolling in some additional training, especially in learning a foreign language such as English and short term technical trainings to keep your skills current with the demand of the industry. It is important to remain optimistic in your search for a new job because once the recovery happens; many companies that have been conservative in hiring will have to hire a lot of people to meet the surge in demand.<\/p>\n

One thing that I consider important when applying for job is writing resume and filling job application. This is a critical skill that university does not teach so I would like to give you some advises because students asked me all the time. Your resume represents you before the company has a chance to meet you. You need to spend time carefully writing it because it must tell the company who you are and what you can do for them. You should not use the same resume for every job that you apply but you must carefully write the resume for each job. I know many students just make hundred copies and send to hundred companies with the hope that somebody will call them for interview. This approach never works because your resume may not match the job description. You need to understand that company personnel do not have time to read your application and resume carefully. If you do not have what they are looking for then they will toss it into the garbage and you will never have a second chance.<\/p>\n

When writing resume, you must think carefully about your choice of words. If you are applying for a job advertised in newspapers, online job boards then look carefully at the words being used in the advertisement and utilize these same words in your resume. I am not suggesting that you mention skills and experience that you do not have but it does make sense to use the same word if possible. When listing your IT technical skills you should also try to use exactly word by word for all the terms that company personnel are familiar with. For example if the job requires \u201cJava Micro Edition\u201d and you listed Java ME skills then it may not be a match because company personnel, maybe a secretary, who review your application, is not a technical person and can not distinguish a requirement for “Java Micro Edition” and Java ME. That is why I always emphasize that when looking for work, you must spend time to fill the application because this is the time that you invest in your future. Remember that your application and resume are sitting on one of the desk of company personnel along with thousands of others. Any mistake could be opportunity lost.<\/p>\n

Using the right job title is also another important factor. Many company use job titles that are relevant within the context of their business. If your resume stated that you have been a “Software Manager” when in fact you are looking for a position as a “Software tester” or “Software developer” then you maybe overqualified, so check the advertised position before apply to be sure that it match your job search. Most companies prefer experienced people, even you may not have experience as you spend most of the time in school, you could still list some experiences such as \u201cDesign a web site\u201d for a friend, \u201cSupport my parents operate a small business\u201d, \u201cHelping my professor do research on \u2026\u201d (List something relevant to the job). Company personnel understand that as a full time student, you may not have what they are looking for in experience but at least you have something rather than nothing. I really recommend that students to spend summer time to work for local software company, even without pay, to gain experiences. In the U.S over 70% of students work during the summer and many with minimum pay, just to gain the experiences. I consider this a good investment in your career.<\/p>\n

I believe once this crisis is over, greater opportunities will emerge across all businesses and there will be some significant changes as companies will battle for domination and market share. Companies that have well design strategies will have advantage over companies that just \u201cWait until better time come\u201d or not prepare for what could happen. Today, it is hard to say when exactly that time will be, but as market confidence grows so too will the options for those companies that have the right strategies and the right people to execute them. More than ever, I believe information technology will emerge as the most desirable and sought after field. With globalization, every company will need people with software skills.<\/p>\n
