Looking for jobs<\/p>\n

In the past ten years, business schools and especially the Master in Business Administration (MBA) was the most popular field with significant numbers of student enrollment but the financial crisis are sending tremors through all business schools. Adding to the large number of laid-off workers and unemployment of business students is a debate about whether business schools bear some responsibility for the crisis. All over the newspapers, online chat-rooms, and TV discussions around the world are critics that point the finger at Business schools who teach students to focus mostly on short term gain, financial manipulation, and shareholders\u2019 return on investments. Last week, a well known professor of business school, Dr. Joshua Parker even admitted on TV that \u201cMost business school are teaching a narrow, utilitarian, profit-motivated curriculum because that is what the financial and banking industry wanted\u201d. He concluded that \u201cit is not surprising that business schools encourage a generation of managers to behave in such a short term, selfish and unethical ways. As professors, we have destroyed a generation of student in such a way that it will take many years to heal this issue because the damage is already done to our young people\u201d. After the debate on TV, several critics demand that from now on, business school must teach ethics as a requirement, not quick financial gain at any costs. The critics are so hard that many business schools have to come on to TV to explain that they can not be blamed for the mistake of few bad people who worked in banks and financial areas. However, the public who suffered most from the financial crisis are angry, just as they are very angry at the top level management who still receive million dollars paid out, are now begin to angry at business schools and their trainings.<\/p>\n

One scenario that has been discussed several times on TV was a situation where three students came to apply for a job in a large banking in the U.S. The Bank gave them a list of numbers of revenue, cost and asked them to come up with the right profit answer. The first student who was very good in mathematic, calculated that profit is equal to revenue minus cost and came up with a number. He was not hired. The second student, more careful than the first, used a calculator and came up with a number and was told he is not selected for the job. The third student smiled and told the bank: \u201cSir, the right answer is whatever number that you want me to put in the profit column\u201d. He was immediately hired. That what TV showed the state of the practice of the current business schools. Of course this was a fiction as the TV and newspapers exaggerated things to sell newspapers and attract audiences but the public already believe that the business school is to be blamed for some of the current problems. The debate is still going on and it drives many business schools to reevaluate their training and how they teach students. This will probably take several years for the training to change but in the mean time, the number of student enrolling is dropping quickly as the stock market continue to sink low and many business professors even worry about their jobs.<\/p>\n

The school year is not over yet but students come to see me for job advises more than any previous year. The current financial crisis is impacting many companies with many people are being forced into unemployment so it is very difficult for graduating students to find jobs this year and probably in the next few years. The first question many students often asked is when the crisis will be over. Of course no one knows but I believe that this situation is temporary for information technology students but it will be more difficult for students in other areas in the next few years. According to the survey of the three largest newspapers in the U.S, the banking, financing and business areas have laid-off nearly seven hundred thousands people in the past six months. Assume that half of these people will continue to looking for jobs in the next four years, that means they will take over three hundred and fifty thousands jobs away from graduating students in these fields. That is why according to those newspapers, over half of students in business and banking are changing their fields quickly and moved onto information technology fields. U.S students are the most practical and sensitive to the job market more than any countries in the world and they monitor the market news very often to ensure that they will get good jobs when graduate. U.S universities are also the most flexible school systems that allow students to change their field of study in the first two years relatively easy without any problems but the victims of this crisis are mostly students in the third and fourth years.<\/p>\n

In the past few weeks, I have seen so many students from business schools come to ask for advices regarding changing study fields, how many credits that they could transfer into Information technology and how many courses that they will need to study in this area.\u00a0 I advised some third year business students to transfer into Information technology management field since they already understand many fundamental concepts of business and the need to use Information technology to enable the business to compete globally. In this case, they may have to take additional courses which may take them additional year before they can graduate. I also advised fourth year business students to complete their degree then apply for a graduate degree in Managing Information System Management (MS).<\/p>\n

As students ask me about job findings, I find that one thing most students have in common is that they all use the Web to search for jobs. But since so many people are looking and the competition is high, it is important that they know how to set themselves apart from others.\u00a0 I told them that they have to learn how to distinguish themselves from all the competition.\u00a0 First they have to work really hard and have to be willing to put in an effort on a daily basis because finding work is really a job itself. Second, they must reaching out to everyone they know and get involved as much as they possibly can. If they allow the opportunity to pass, as time continue to goes by, they will have to compete with more and more people because in the next few months, more companies will lay off more people. Another important advises is when they see a job description, they must make sure that they have at least a truly match of 75-percent of the qualifications listed or else they just wasting their time. In this highly competitive market, companies are very selective and they often eliminating out people that they don’t feel are qualified or are a good match for what they’re trying to fill. Today, many students may have to accept less salary than they have anticipated and some may have to travel to different places to get jobs rather than where they live.<\/p>\n

Make sure you customize your resume to match the job description.<\/p>\n

Do as many in-person interviews as possible. Interviews are good practice to give you more confident in the next interview.<\/p>\n

Meet with other student who are looking for jobs to share information and advises.<\/p>\n

Respond very quickly to any job opening from potential employers, do not wait.<\/p>\n

Volunteer at work at some companies to gain experiences, even with minimum pay. Some salaries is better than none.<\/p>\n

Learn how to improve your capabilities to match those of the desired job opportunity.<\/p>\n

Explore contract-work and volunteer work just to gain experiences.<\/p>\n

Remain open to new and different job-search strategies.<\/p>\n
