It seems that the job market is worsening day after day, but as I look closer, I find that in most developed countries, people are retiring by the millions and there is a critical shortage of certain skills that have to be filled as soon as possible. What does this fact means to students who are now entering university or considering a career in the next few years? My advice is not to be desperate but look more into the trend of the global economy, especially in developed countries. As the economy is getting better, developed countries would probably be the first to recover and have high demands for skilled workers.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, I read a survey by Manpower, a large employment consultant firm in the U.S. Manpower released a list of jobs in which companies find it difficult to fill or \u201cHot jobs\u201d in the next few years. Among the top high demand and high paying jobs are: Nursing, Software Engineers, Medical Doctor, Information Technology Management, Accountant, and Computer Technicians in Networking and Security. The interesting fact in this survey of over 2,000 US companies is 31 percent of them reported difficulties filling these positions today, despite the current financial crisis. This should come as no surprise, given that the number of student enrollment in engineering and technology in the U.S has dropped significantly in the past ten years. The main reason is many are pursuing career in banking, global trading and financing during the \u201cGood time of financial trading\u201d few years ago. Because of the shortage, companies have to outsource works to countries like India, China, and Eastern Europe and bring in foreign workers into the U.S to fill these gaps. As the news of software outsourcing grew and distorted by the news media, many students were afraid of not finding jobs in the technology area so they select other careers and contribute more to the skill shortage. Despite the fact that many companies are laying off people, many jobs are still difficult to fill even in this financial crisis because as technology changes, many workers do not keep up with the change and therefore could not fill these \u201cHot jobs\u201d. Many companies also use these \u201cSlow economy\u201d time to upgrade their information systems, improve performance by applying the latest technology to prepare for better time. Workers that do not have the proper skills will be letting go and workers with the right training and right skills are still in high demand. All of these factors are contributes to the significant shortage of skilled workers in the technology sector. Economy experts predict that when the global economy improves in the next few years, demand for these skills would be so high that the competition for highly skilled workers would create another \u201ceconomic crisis\u201d for countries that do not have enough skilled workers but too many unskilled workers.<\/p>\n<p>So if you are interest in one of these occupations what\u2019s the next step? Let\u2019s take a look at the survey results and get some perspective on what the shortages really mean. Even as thousands of software jobs continue to be outsourced to India and China each year, demand for software developers, software engineers and network administrators is so strong that within the next ten years, the entire world still needs more than 1 million software people each year according to the Manpower survey. \u201cOne of the challenges that many companies facing is finding highly skilled, well trained people in both business and technical so they can communicate with customers and managers\u201d says Melanie Holmes, a vice president at Manpower North America. She adds: \u201cAs technology changes, many universities do not keep up with the change and continue to produce students that do not have the skills that industry need. Today almost every industry needs software people because almost everything is controlled by software as more and more companies replacing workers with automation and these systems are controlled by software. For example, with fuel prices are spiking, oil and natural gas exploration are heating up as soon as the economy improves, demand for information systems that control oil field and natural gas reserves will be rising fast. Software engineers and information technology will be hot jobs for awhile,\u201d says Holmes. \u201cMost oil companies have employees averaging in their late 50s and they will have to retire soon and they must hire thousand more to take over. Since energy will be a major issue in the next ten years or so until alternatives are found, information systems that manage and control oil fields will be hot because today, most new oil fields are in the ocean and must be controlled by robots and information systems\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Melanie also says that her company data shows another labor shortage in the healthcare areas due to the surge in million of people retiring. Her list includes healthcare workers, doctor, nurse and physician assistant. According to her, these are very hot careers for students who are interested in stable and good paying jobs. As more and more people are retiring, they will need more hospitals, doctors, nurses, and healthcare systems. Today schools in the developed countries like in the U.S, Europe can not produce that many healthcare workers fast enough so each year, the U.S has to recruit hundred thousand nurses from the Philippines, Malaysia and China because there are not enough nurses to take care of the large population of retirees. Even country like Japan that has been very conservative on immigration is now opening up their border for more nurses from China to enter and work in Japan. The same situation is happening in Europe as more and more nurses from Eastern Europe are migrating to work in Germany, France, and Scandinavia.<\/p>\n<p>Melanie advises: \u201cSoftware and healthcare are two hottest jobs in the world today and at least the next ten years. The demand for these jobs is so huge, by the million each year. With the globalization trend, workers with these skills can find work almost everywhere. If I was a student, I would choose either software or healthcare for high paying and stable jobs for many years to come\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>What do you think?
