Looking for jobs<\/p>\n

Let me share with you an interesting story that I read from the newspaper today (May 5- 2009) about two computer science students John Smith and Thomas Jones. Both are graduating this year and looking for jobs.<\/p>\n

John Smith is graduating from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign with a degree in computer science. He lists his skills in resume as follows: Programming languages: Java and Perl and database programs: SQL Server and My SQL. He also lists his hobby as: I started a Web site to sell herbal vitamin supplements that I brought from oversea suppliers to students in my school and I made several thousand dollars in 2 years.<\/p>\n

Thomas Jones is graduating from University of California at Irvine with a degree in Computer science. He lists his skills in resume as follows: Programming languages: Java, C++, Perl and SQL server database and My SQL. He also lists his hobbies: Reading, computer games, music.<\/p>\n

Smith’s degree and technical skills got him a job interview but his business skills set him apart from the rest of his computer friends and he gets a job offer of $70,000\/year.<\/p>\n

Jones’s degree and technical skills also got him several interviews but did not get any job offer.<\/p>\n

What is the issue here? According to the new report released this week by the Society for Information Management (SIM) in this financial crisis time, you need more than technical skills to get a job. Based on interviews with over thousand SIM members, all of them senior software managers, the study found that business skills accounted for five of the 10 attributes global companies want over the next ten years. The other five most-requested skills include software project management; outsourcing management; enterprise and system architecture and software engineering technical skills.<\/p>\n

Dr. Kate Kaiser, a professor at MarquetteUniversity in Milwaukee who manage the study said: “It’s now more important than ever to have business skills not just technical skills. Companies are more aware about what Information Technology can do for them. While some technical jobs such as programming and testing continue to be outsourced to other countries, the jobs most likely to be retained will emphasize software engineering and formation system management skills such as business analysis, requirements<\/p>\n

engineering, business re-engineering or project management , rather than purely programming skills”.<\/p>\n

“That offers great opportunities to young engineers with the right skills and mind-sets”, said Dr. Kate Kaiser. She pointed to two former students who were promoted from programming to project management jobs in just two years rather than the five to seven years such a promotion typically requires. “The average age of CIOs I meet today is five years younger than it was a decade ago,”.<\/p>\n

The trouble is that many young students haven’t gotten the message. Many are less like Smith but more like Thomas Jones, a computer science graduate at University of California, at Irvine.\u00a0 Apart from “Introduction to economic” class, the 21-year-old avoided taking business and management courses. “My technical courses such as C++, Java and Data structures already took up most of my time,” Jones said. While the UC Irvine student has been looking for entry-level software jobs for months and recently had several interviews but that’s where his lack of business background was exposed. “They didn’t ask me any technical questions during the interview,” Jones said, angrily. “They want to know about my skill in information system management and whether I know how to create a SWOT for their IT product. They ask about strategy, business process engineering and all the stuff that I have no idea where they come from”.<\/p>\n

Today universities are part of the problem, since they still offer many obsolete trainings to students. Most trainings are still focusing on programming and testing while the industry needs other skills. Many CIOs told Dr. Kate Kaiser that business and management skills — especially the ability to communicate well — are what they desire most from their workers.<\/p>\n

“I’m always telling my students the importance of understand the business, know the management theories and focus on writing, communication and listening,” she said. “They just ignore it cause they need to spend more time in Mathematics, Physics, and programming languages. After graduate, they could not get jobs because what they have is not what the industry needs”<\/p>\n

Even in the more technically specialized area of computing, business skills are essential, said Jim Michael, a manager from IBM. “I don’t think all students should go and get a business degree,” Michael said. “But if they want to get a good jobs, they better be able to understand how IT can drive business value.”<\/p>\n

The question is: Should the ideal graduate have double majors in computer science and business administration? Not necessarily, said Dr. Kaiser, who points out the logistical difficulties of coordinating dual degrees. Taking a good sampling of management and business courses while obtaining a computer science degree is often enough, she said.<\/p>\n

But Dr. Kaiser said she also believes that universities must start to adjust requirements for their computer science or software engineering majors to add courses in information system management. “When I graduated with my computer science degree, I had to go back for my MBA several years later to catch up,” she said. “I think universities must move quickly to produce more graduates with blended skills to meet the need of the industry.”<\/p>\n
