New manager in bad situation<\/p>\n

A manager wrote to me: \u201cI am a new project manager in a software company as I have only worked there last month. My team only has twenty developers but five months ago it had thirty two. Some were laid off due to limited budget issues so the team was discouraged and somehow angry. I do not like this hostile feeling as I had expected a different situation when I accepted the position. I do not know what to do. Please advice? Thanks.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: Stepping into a bad situation like that is difficult as it provides a challenge for a new manager like you. My advice is you must manage the team quickly before it deteriorates further. This is how you gain respect from company management and the team. I believe your team members have been looking to you to bring something different to the working situation even they are discouraged and hopeless.<\/p>\n

For a team of thirty two that changed into a team of twenty people is quite bad so you have to engage with them and pull together a mutual and collaborative task where everybody must make a contribution to get the project continues. You must tell them that this is not a time to feel bad but a learning experience. When everybody working together towards a common goal, you can achieve more than you expected. Making the most out of fewer people is always a case of getting more from less. However, if they can do it, then there is a great sense of self-satisfaction and proud too. You can challenge them: \u201cNobody believes that you can do it but let\u2019s we prove them wrong. Together I believe we can get this project back on track and deliver the best software possible.\u201d<\/p>\n

The challenge is for you and your team to find a better ways of doing what can be done each day as you are rebuilding the team by encouraging and motivating them.
