    The current financial crisis has created \u201creality awareness\u201d among students on the job opportunities. Few years ago, students always asked me about the “highest paying jobs” now they asked me about what would be the “safest jobs” or jobs that are in high demand. The key to finding the jobs of the future is to know what to study and where to look.<\/p>\n

    According to the research of McKinsey & Co., nearly 85% of jobs created in the next ten years will be “Knowledge works” because they are needed to support the fast changing technologies. The U.S. Department of Labor identifies Computer network systems, Telecommunications, Software engineering, Information system management, Medical and healthcares as the best jobs projected to grow explosively in the next ten years. For Health care and Medical, the job market shows no signs of slowing. A large aging population in the U.S and Europe will open up more opportunities for jobs in senior assisted-living facilities, nursing homes and these things are all going to have to expand tremendously to meet demand. There is a critical shortage of nurses in both Europe and the U.S and each year they have to issue special \u201cwork permits\u201d to bring in thousand of nurses from other countries to fill the needs so I think this is a good occupation to study.<\/p>\n

    According to the U.S Department of Labor, over the next seven years, the number of jobs in the information-technology area is expected to grow 24% more than twice the overall job-growth rate of any fields. However, these jobs requires a combination of “Business and technical” work where people must have knowledge of both areas to operate the business successfully. The median salary is for entry-level in the U.S is around $70,000 that could go to $120,000 to people with five years of experiences. The U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics says this will be the fastest growing and most secure occupations through at least 2016 because the application of computers and networks has resulted in an urgent need for people to manage these systems. Software engineering people are especially in high demand in this global economy because companies must keep spending on technology to stay competitive. To get the most for their investments, many jobs will be outsourced overseas to reduce costs. \u00a0Following are the hot jobs in high demand:<\/p>\n

    1. Enterprise<\/b> architects. <\/b>One of the top priorities for many global companies is to consolidate and simplifying their infrastructures which requires an enterprise wide architecture and standards. This is a new and high demand jobs but very few people have so demand for them will be very high for the foreseeable future.<\/li>\n
    2. Business analysts\/Requirements Engineers. <\/b>IT works must be aligned with the business and supports strategic business objectives. This job requires high skilled business analysts, requirements engineer, and relationship managers. People who comfortably work between business and technology. This role requires strong technical and communication skills.<\/li>\n
    3. Network Security Specialists. <\/b>Security specialists will remain in very high demand. Exposure to security related incidents represents one of the largest business risks, and building secured IT infrastructures, systems, and processes is critical.<\/li>\n
    4. Web services. <\/b>Most software <\/b>applications will be built on Web services architecture. People with SOAP, XML, .NET, experience will be needed. Demand will likely to outstrip supply, especially during the next several years.<\/li>\n
    5. Open source programming. <\/b>The Linux and open source gains momentum every day as more and more products go the open source route. The amount of investment and intellectual capital that is being poured into the open source movement is unprecedented.<\/li>\n
    6. Agile programming. <\/b>Approximately two-thirds of large organizations are adopting some form of agile processes for their internal applications development efforts. \u00a0Those individuals who have embraced these processes and have hands-on experience will be in great demand.<\/li>\n
    7. Business intelligence specialists. <\/b>Companies must collecting customer and market data and store in their databases. The focus now is on turning all of that data into knowledge and using it to increase revenues, capture more market share, and improve profitability. It takes expertise with business intelligence and analytic tools to accomplish this and these skills will be in high demand.<\/li>\n
    8. Business process modeling specialists. <\/b>Competitive advantage with IT is built around re-engineered or increasingly complex new business processes. The ability to quickly model and automate business processes is becoming an absolute necessity for IT organizations, and people with the skills and experience to do these tasks are in short supply.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      As you can see from above, all these jobs are taught in Software Engineering, Information System Management and Computer Science programs. My advice to you is: \u201cA good education is a good start and a degree is the first step that opens some door but education does not end with the degree. If you wish to remain competitive, you will need to constantly improve your skills, and keep up with the changes in the industry. Having a degree does not guarantee a job but you must demonstrate your knowledge with certain aptitude and a willingness to continue learning. Regardless of qualifications, the experience that you have will be a major factor in your employability. A degree in computer science is one thing but five years working as a software developers is quite another. For university graduates, the lack of experience is a hampering factor because many job listings require a certain number of years of experience, which may seem difficult to those who have dedicated their entire four years in the university. \u00a0Since working in the summer or internship in the industry is still a new concept in Asia, I strongly recommend that you talk to local software companies and volunteer to work for them with minimum pay just to gain experience. You will see that this is a good investment because you will gain more knowledge than others. If you are good, chances are that they will hire you when you are graduated.<\/p>\n

      Once you have the skills, you will be more confidence and confidence is a great skill to have in an interview situation. Many students may do well in school but do not have the ability to express themselves confidently during the interview. Confidence does not mean you have to know the answer to every question but it does mean that you should not be afraid should you come across a question in a subject with which you are unfamiliar. Confidence will breed passion and passion always reflects clearly in the interview. If the company sees that you are passionate about a particular technical subject, they will definitely note that as positive because most passionate people are high performance people, they love what they are doing and they are ideal workers for any company.<\/p>\n

      The next best thing you can bring to a job interview is a demonstration of your skills. You could talk about a programming language or a number of grades that you received in school but if you can demonstrate a solid example of those skills, you will do much better. In the software field, a summary of programs that you wrote in school, a web development or design that you did; a software tool that you created for a capstone project are invaluable. The visual aspect is important – whether it is printouts, screenshots, or live demonstrations – such assets will demonstrate to the company about your skills and clearly distinguish you from others who only show up with a degree.<\/p>\n
