Trong b\u00e0i tr\u00ecnh b\u00e0y cho h\u1ed9i c\u1ef1u sinh vi\u00ean CMU, gi\u00e1o s\u01b0 Ray Bareiss c\u1ee7a \u0110\u1ea1i h\u1ecdc Carnegie Mellon chia s\u1ebb m\u1ed9t s\u1ed1 k\u1ebft qu\u1ea3 trong nghi\u00ean c\u1ee9u c\u1ee7a \u00f4ng \u1ea5y v\u1ec1 CMU:<\/p>\n

1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 87% c\u1ef1u sinh vi\u00ean tin r\u1eb1ng gi\u00e1o d\u1ee5c t\u1ea1i Carnegie Mellon \u0111\u00e3 cung c\u1ea5p \u01b0u th\u1ebf c\u1ea1nh tranh l\u1edbn.<\/p>\n

CMU Alumni Association<\/p>\n

In the annual CMU alumni association this year, (August 9, 2009), there were some gathering of top people in software industry and here is the report:<\/p>\n

In his presentation to CMU alumni, Professor Ray Bareiss of CarnegieMellonUniversity shared some outcomes on his research about CMU:<\/p>\n

1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 87% of alumni believe their Carnegie Mellon education has provided significant competitive advantage.<\/p>\n

2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Virtually all CMU graduates have more than one job offers, despite the financial crisis.<\/p>\n

3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 All CMU graduates have received salary increases within the first 2 years of employment; 45% of those were greater than 20%;<\/p>\n

4)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 65% of CMU graduates were promoted within 5 years of working;<\/p>\n

In articulating the Carnegie Mellon\u2019s approach, Professor Bareiss stressed the strengths of CMU\u2019s \u201cLearning by Doing\u201d approach:<\/p>\n

1) Active problem solving in \u201cLearning by doing\u201d promotes acquisition of “knowledge to be used”<\/p>\n

2) Realistic learning contexts promote more knowledge transfer<\/p>\n

3) Knowledge and skills should be taught in scenario holistically<\/p>\n

4) Teaching should be “just in time” so students can apply immediately.<\/p>\n

Bareiss’ explanation exemplifies the approach.<\/p>\n

Students are divided into several small teams, given a vague idea from “management” and tasked to develop it, using real-world techniques and processes, including:<\/p>\n

*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Conduct Contextual Inquiry interviews<\/p>\n

*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Model user and customer behavior<\/p>\n

*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Perform persona- and scenario-based design<\/p>\n

*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Derive high-level requirements and define the “whole product’<\/p>\n

*\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Document the result in a product vision document<\/p>\n

To provide the audience with flesh testimony to the strengths of the program, Bareiss turned the microphone over to one student Alok Rishi, a software engineering from Sun Microsystems, who will soon be graduating with an M.S. in Information System Management. Alok said:<\/p>\n

“I had a Bachelor degree in Computer Science, I wasn’t particularly looking to get a Master degree, but I heard about this CMU program, which is to me like a special program tailored for the software industry. It gives you a complete end to end view of conceiving a software product or technology idea, innovating it, bringing that innovation to the market, building a company out of it, and running and growing that company, with all the people dynamics and technology dynamics around it. So I enrolled and … At work, my colleagues began to see very vivid changes in me almost immediately, I was manifesting what I learned at work, in two forms: I was assuming more of a leadership role, being much more comfortable in a larger people dynamics type of way, and also I had moved away from being sort of being in a silo and spreading out to harness innovation more broadly within Sun and the industry. So it leads to profound transformative changes within, but it also resulted in my career taking off. So I progressed from Software Engineer to Senior Engineer in the last year and to Chief Technologist and Director at Sun. A couple of months ago, I left Sun and started my own company.”<\/p>\n

Rishi’s company, Megha Software, is an early stage software technology start-up that accelerates the adoption of cloud computing by Enterprises. It enables thousands of existing enterprise applications to move seamlessly into private\/public clouds as Software-as-a-Service (SaaS), radically changing software distribution, use, management, and economics for the Enterprise.<\/p>\n

Another person, Raymond J. Lane, A senior Manager in Kleiner Perkins, also a former Carnegie Mellon graduates offered insight on Carnegie Mellon’s impact from his own life story: When Lane was a boy, his father, an executive in the steel industry in Pittsburgh, attended night school at Carnegie Mellon. Lane said: “He would work all day, then he would have dinner with us, and then he would go upstairs and study all night … And he would explain to me that what was going on at Carnegie Mellon was possibly the development of a whole new industry that would be more exciting, higher growth and might be an industry that would attract me more than the steel industry.” So eventually, he enrolled and graduated from CMU then got a job offer from IBM. Lane said: “After several years with IBM, I left for another position in EDS, another high tech company then I spent twelve years with Booz Allen, I spent eight years with Oracle then eight years with Kleiner Perkins. The most important thing that I have done in all of these endeavors is to find top talent. And in all three of them, a management consulting company, a software company and a venture capital company, Carnegie Mellon has been my number one source of talent … I have hired hundreds of CMU graduates and they are great \u2026 So much more analytical, so much more practical …”<\/p>\n

Apple Inc. Vice President Edward H. Frank, also a CMU graduates underscored Lane’s message with an observation from his own experience:<\/p>\n

“Many of you who are in high technology companies probably have heard the expression called ‘The Carnegie Mellon Mafia’ which means CMU graduates who move up to executive positions that control software companies. Microsoft has one, Apple has one, Sun has certainly has one, Google also have one and many more. The talent level of CMU graduates are so extreme that we kind of all congregate together, smart people like to talk to other smart people. If you look around the software industry, you will find that most top people are all come from CMU. Let me give you an example: Ralph Guggenheim, graduated in 1979 is now the CEO of alligatorplanet, a multi-million software company. Few years ago, he found the Pixar Animation Studios with Steve Job. Richard Hilleman, also a CMU graduates and now the Creative Director of Electronic Arts, Inc. Golan Levin, Director of Studio for Creative Inquiry for Electronic Arts, and Jessica Trybus, Director of Hollywood Entertainment Technology Center and CEO of Etcetera Edutainment. These people, all come from CMU are now controlling many companies in Silicon Valley and a large part of the software industry. If you look at the statistic from software industry, you probably find out that a majority of key people in software industry are from CMU.<\/p>\n

In framing the evening’s theme, Frank said, “If you look back millions of years ago at how humanity evolved, it seems that there are two things that human beings did that make us uniquely human, we develop technology, to help us hunt and help us eat, and that makes a lot of sense; but then we does this other thing … we make art … Carnegie Mellon is a unique institution, because it has great strengths in both of these areas. The crossover between Art and Technology is stronger than ever.”<\/p>\n

At the end of the panel session, Beverly Wheeler, Executive Director of the Washington, D.C. State Board of Education and President-elect of the Carnegie Mellon Alumni Association surprised Ralph Guggenheim by presenting him with the Alumni Award.<\/p>\n

The evening’s discussion was a reminder that although there is more to life than advancing technology, e.g., the fine art, even in the pursuit of these other riches, technology has become a vital element of success, and furthermore, that Carnegie Mellon is at the forefront of both pursuits.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
