Population growth<\/p>\n

My friend, an university professor showed me a newspaper article stated that India’s population continue to grow from 1.15 billion today to 1.5 billion in 2020 – surpassing China’s. He also pointed out by that time, one worker in four in the world expected to be an Indian and one worker in six will be Chinese. He concluded:”The whole world will be dominated by Indian and Chinese workers”.<\/p>\n

I told him: “Your assumption is based solely on population but what are those people supposed to do? I do not see any opportunities for them if their education systems do not change to accommodate the population growth. Most jobs in the future are “Knowledge works” not “Labor works” so without proper education and training, I am afraid that they will experienced significant unemployment and poverty. By having many young people available with nothing much to do and no future to look for, they may involve in violent, drugs and anti-social activities, or they could become targets for recruitment by extremist groups or involve in terrorism. As an educator, I believe it is our duty to work with governments to identify ways to improve the education systems so young people can get good jobs and benefit the society. If not, it will lead to heightened social tension, unstable political, in the coming years. My friend seemed surprised because he has not thinking through the issue of having many people without jobs. He said: “For years, people have talked about improving education but all I saw are plans but no action. Government is too busy with many things such as economy, financial crisis etc., education is not a high priority.<\/p>\n

I told him: “Education is the fundamental for progress. No country in the world could advance if their people are not well educated. Without proper education, we will continue to react to events that happen to us rather than actively control them. The world is changing fast and technology is the main catalyst. Today we have many technologies that<\/p>\n

could improve the literacy rates of our people. What we need is to invest in infrastructure and education so we can stay globally competitive. We must focus on the rural areas, which desperately need to upgrade their roads, ports, highways, and telecommunication<\/p>\n

infrastructure to accommodate the economy growth there”.<\/p>\n

My friend asked:”Why the rural area and not cities? We do not have enough money to invest there”<\/p>\n

I told him:”This is a big lesson that we must learn from China. Today, China is paying a heavy price for its development policies that focus in its big coastal cities because their big cities’ economies growth significantly but their rural areas remained impoverished. People are rushing to cities for better jobs and better life and create a major social problems everywhere. To avoid a similar situation, which already have disastrous social consequences, we need to get to work immediately to bridge the widening economic gap and knowledge gap and create a balance opportunities to our people throughout the country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
