Bill Gates<\/p>\n

Sep 2009 – Bill Gates, co-founder and Chairman Microsoft Corporation was in New Delhi to participate in the ‘CEO Forum’ with the theme of “Transforming India through Technology”. \u00a0Addressing the CEOs at the event, he shared his views on technology and business being inextricably interwoven, as well as how transformation could be brought about with the smart use of technology.<\/p>\n

Talking to the CEOs, Gates spoke about how protectionism would not be good for the US and harm its industry. A vocal critic of the US’ immigration policy, he also expressed his support for the free flow of skilled talent to America. He said that software engineering is an important skill that being sought in every countries and software engineers should be allowed to travel and work wherever they like. “Immigration restrictions would be terrible for the US,” Gates said.<\/p>\n

Gates also pointed out that India faced a “shortage of PhDs in software engineering” – Indian universities were producing only 100 software engineering doctorates annually and, therefore, many top students had to go abroad to study such as in the US where, out of 1,500 software engineering doctorates, 250 were Indians.<\/p>\n

Gates, divided his time between philanthropic activities and Microsoft. He also received the Indira Gandhi Prize for Peace, Disarmament and Development on behalf of the Gates Foundation. The foundation was being recognized for its “pioneering and exemplary philanthropic work around the world and in India, in health.”<\/p>\n
