BusinessSchool Crisis<\/p>\n

The problems of the financial crisis are now reaching many business schools in the U.S and Europe. The hardest hit is the center of business school: The Master of Business Administration (MBA) program where in past several years enjoyed significant student enrollment with the promise of high paying jobs. Most business schools today have to rethink their teaching approaches to finance, investment, banking and changing their programs quickly to adjust to the changing time. The main pressure is the debate about whether business schools are responsible for the financial crisis. Many newspapers and TV media around the world notice the arrogance in the business school programs and accuse them of focusing too much on short term gain and profits without thinking about the consequences. They also blame many universities professors who taught students about greed, making money for the company or themselves but not about ethic, morality and eventually contribute to the economic meltdown. Of course many business schools defense their positions by stated that they can not be blamed for the financial issues because their graduated students behave badly once they got jobs with finance companies and banks. However, as student enrollment decrease by 40% to 60% in 2008 and 2009, and most graduated students could not find jobs, many schools understand that they must change quickly. As the news about high number of students in business schools can not find jobs anywhere, the number of students studied business drop quickly and most newspapers predict that there will not be any opportunities for graduate students in the next several years as the number of people who are working in business area having the highest unemployment rate, only a little better than the people who work in the bankrupt automobile industry.<\/p>\n

Business schools that once taught students how to make the most money in a shortest time are now focusing on how to survive their own enrollment crisis. Many schools saw their enrollment dropped and began to discuss options such as changing curricula and lay off professors. The common solutions are creating new classes on surviving the economic crisis and try to figure out how to reduce costs without doing long term damage to the school. As more schools create courses on ethic, risk management, regulation, laws and government to replace courses in creative financing, mortgage loans, the number of student enrollment is continuing drop significantly forcing them to look for more tactical approaches to survive the hard times. The difficult situation that they can not solve today is simple: There is no job for business school graduates as so many people who has experiences working are looking for jobs, competing with newly graduated students. As more banks are closing, more businesses are laying off people, especially in finance and business area, it is very difficult to get works. The wave of loosing jobs started in the U.S and rapidly spread to Europe and then Asia as the effect of the financial crisis begin to impact businesses worldwide.<\/p>\n

Today, many business professors begin to ask \u201cDo long accepted principles of financing and management still apply to the situation today? How is globalization impacting current theoretical economic framework? Which courses in finance and economics are relevant in the near future? According to Bernard Pant, professor at the Fontainebleau business school, many professors are also begin to question their teaching approaches as they also experiencing the pain of their students and the consequences of what they have been teaching for years. The highest priority is determining how to make the changes needed to survive this hard time to earn back the respect of society. Dr. Sean Meehan, Dean of the Switzerland business school stated in a TV interview: \u201cWhat really important is to understand that financial principles are the core of our teaching, our way of teaching business students. The issue is the way people act when applying them, not the theories of making money. We need to protect our program and seriously taking actions to correct the concept of applying them in the real world. The best way is to learn from past mistake and focus on something else rather than just maximizing profit regardless of the risk\u201d. According to George Starkey, a professor at NottinghamUniversity business school, as long as the economy will recover within the next few years, the students will return to business school but until then, there will not be much opportunity for business school students to find works in this financial crisis. He advises students to switch into other field of studies as a realistic solution for today.<\/p>\n
