Software and economic growth<\/p>\n

Few weeks ago, I was in Bangalore the center of High tech industry in India. This is my fourteen times visiting this city but every time I came here, I was surprised by changes as the city continues to grow bigger and more crowded. During my travel this year, I can see that almost every country is suffering from the financial crisis with many factories closing and laid off workers, most construction sites were halted as money is running out, but not India.<\/p>\n

There is lot of optimism here about the economy. Major stock indexes have roughly doubled; many companies are advertising their stock offerings on television. Newspapers were full of articles about more bonuses to high tech workers and company plans to expanse. My friend, Vivek Ramankrishna a senior manager from Infosys told me: “They say high tech is only a small fraction of the economy but it drives the economic growth and revives India to be a powerful nation today. Ten years ago, many people thought agriculture was the main driver because it helped feed the country and high tech was only a playground for few highly educated people. They were wrong; high tech is the future as it accelerates India to a powerful economic force in this 21st century”.<\/p>\n

As we walk around InfosysUniversity, a brand new campus that Infosys recently built to educated 10,000 workers each year. Vivek said: “In the past three months India receives nearly $7 billion more in foreign direct investment as everybody in the world is investing in India. Investors see the potential and what India can do and they like it. From January to June, India received about $15 billion in foreign investment, more than any country in the world as we are building more factories to build cars, airplanes, electronics and of course high tech companies is expanding all over India. Few years from now we will export cars, electronics and products to the Southeast Asia market eventually to the world”.<\/p>\n

If the current investment continues, Indian economy could grow at 8 to 12 percent this year, far sooner than forecasts by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and business analysts. While most Indian are optimistic, some do worry that the growth can not continue if the global financial markets take another turn down or confidence in India\u2019s economic could change if the government does not solve the problems of improving infrastructures, transportation, housing and implement economic reforms to lift hundreds of millions people out of poverty. For a country that had many problems in its economy in the past 50 years, India has changed significantly due to increasingly foreign investment in its high tech industry but a country with over one billion people, many are still live in poverty, India still has to do more. Today, agricultural sector makes up about 17 percent of India\u2019s economy but supports more than half its population, rising foreign investment in high tech sector can help offset some of the economic effect but will not solve the social problem. Today, India’s state owned education system is still a product of the colonial time and very slow to change that is why the high tech industry has given up and open its own private universities to train knowledge workers.<\/p>\n

Vivek told me: “Almost every large high tech company is opening their own universities, Infosys has three campuses, TCS has two, and Wipro has one. We are collaborating with top universities in the U.S and UK to make sure our students receive the best education possible. Some Western universities are also eager to get a piece of this market and begin to open their own campus in India. We have seen what education can do to country like India, investment in education is the best possible to improve the economy and in the 21st century, knowledge is the key driver for everything. Because there are a lot of good knowledge workers here, foreigners are pouring money into India, there is strong overseas demand for Indian stocks and bonds, companies here are doing billions of dollars business last year. There is a lot of foreign investment in India because investors see that India and China are the two fastest growth areas in the world. Due to our vibrant economy, car sales were up 13 percent in the past five months, builders can not build enough houses and housing prices double every 6 months or so. People are seeing the economy is more robust than ever before and looking back, everybody agree that the investment in high technology, especially the software outsourcing is really the right decision. Today India does not have enough software workers to meet the global demand even our school system graduate million engineers each year. Let’s imagine if we have few more million software people, we can add at least 20 to 50 billion dollars more to the economy and create several million jobs. In the past few years, we already expanded into several countries and hired more software workers but it was not enough. As long as there is demand for high tech workers, India will continue to grow but we also expanding our focus into manufacturing, biotechnology and others areas too.
