Software and fatty foods<\/p>\n

Last month, when I was in Bangalore I found a very interesting article in The Guardian newspaper, warning that many software workers in India are facing obesity as millions of its poor people still struggle for not having enough food to eat.\u00a0 The newspaper said as the country becomes richer, many people are becoming fatter and, like Westerners, they are seeking medical help. Many of them, especially rich software engineers have become patients at Dr Sanjay Borude’s clinic to have surgery for gastric banding to reduce the size of the stomach to restrict the amount of food absorbed.<\/p>\n

This kind of operation never happens anywhere else beside the U.S and Europe but now it happens in India. Dr. Borude has so many patients that he can not serve so he opens training classes to train other doctors from other cities to meet a growing demand for slimming surgery. Together with surgery, exercise and spas businesses are also doing a very good business in India\u2019s big cities as many people exercise to reduce weights. According to the newspaper, seventy-six per cent of women in New Delhi, are suffering from abdominal obesity, and eighty five percent of men are obese based on report from All-India Institute of Medical Sciences. Contradict to western countries where most obese people are poor in India they are rich and very rich. Many work in software industry, they sit all day in front of computer and eat whenever they have time. Dr. Anoop Misra, the author of the report, said. ‘It is a serious problem for India, especially the rich people. In Bangalore and other cities that associated with software industry, it is almost epidemic. Software workers are living more sedentary lives. They make lots of money so they pick up their cell phones, order pizza, hamburgers and fatty western foods. Nobody eat Indian foods anymore, it is not \u201ccool\u201d.<\/p>\n

Another interesting fact is Indian society consider overweight is a sign of richness. Dr. Misra said in the newspaper: ‘Having a big belly is a sign of prosperity, but that’s changing as more and more people died of heart attack and other gastric diseases. However, today thin is still consider as weak, poor, and low in sexual performance and young girls still prefer men fat men with lot of money. This kind of old customs fuels the desire for western foods as more people eating out in restaurants, buying pre-cooked foods as more western chain restaurants are opening business in India. Today, you can find that most Mc Donald restaurants are crowded with young people buying Chicken Maharajah Macs. The Mc Donald chain is expanding to other towns and cities at the rate of two to three per month as demand is high. Other fast food chain such as Pizza hut, Kentucky Fried Chicken is also doing a very good business in India. Dr. Misra complained: ‘People are snacking their ways to an alarming rate, children no longer take lunch-boxes to school. They drink cola and eat burgers. There is no awareness among parents that this is a problem\u201d.<\/p>\n

With obesity come health problems, from diabetes to heart failure. An estimated 25 million Indians have diabetes, and this is forecast to grow to 57 million by 2020. Doctors say the government has failed to register the scale of the impending crisis but government is still debate on “How can people here have obesity when so many are dying of malnutrition?”<\/p>\n

This problem underlines the major divide between India’s rich and poor or the educated and the uneducated. The educated live in urban areas and adopt the western living where the uneducated live in the impoverished rural regions, where millions are struggling to feed themselves. The outsourcing business that brings several billion dollars each year into India also brings in western living, western foods and make the gap between rich and poor larger than a decade ago. A newly graduated software engineer can earn more in one month than a farmer make in the whole year. As the number of software people increases, the number of restaurants, food vendors, bars, nightclubs also increases to meet the demand and it seems that everybody is happy, including special hospitals for the rich to reduce weights.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
