Bill Gates speak at Harvard<\/p>\n

Bill Gates returned to HarvardUniversity to address its graduating class and receive an honorary degree after dropping out of the college 33 years ago to found Microsoft Corp. He spent much of his address on the issues of global poverty and disease, and how to encourage more people to get involved in trying to solve those problems.<\/p>\n

Gates began his speech. “I’ve been waiting more than 30 years to say this: ‘Dad, I always told you I’d come back and get my degree,'”. All commencement speakers are given an honorary Harvard degree and Gates was awarded a Doctor of Laws degree. He’s already received several honorary doctorates from other universities around the world; the most recent being awarded by China’s TsinghuaUniversity in April.<\/p>\n

When Gates arrived at Harvard in 1973, he was uncertain of his study, but sure of his passion for software. He quit Harvard in his junior year to focus on his software company, Microsoft, which he cofounded with his childhood friend Paul Allen. Gates described how he encouraged Harvard friend Steve Ballmer, now Microsoft CEO, to quit school and join the software company when it has only about 50 employees.<\/p>\n

Gates said “I’m a bad influence, that’s why I was invited to speak to your graduation. If I had spoken at your first year in university, fewer of you might be here today.”<\/p>\n

However, Gates was all seriousness during his 25-minute speech, expressing his big regret about his time at college. “I left Harvard with no real awareness of the awful inequities in the world, and it took me many decades to find out about the unbelievable poverty, hunger, and disease in developing countries. Human’s greatest advances are not in its discoveries but in how those discoveries are applied to reduce inequity, hunger and poverty.”<\/p>\n

Gates spoke of trying to develop “a more creative ways” that could help technology works better for the disadvantaged. “If you believe that every life has equal value, it’s revolting to learn that some lives are seen as worth saving and others are not.”<\/p>\n

He described his frustration at being on a global health conference at the World Economic Forum in Switzerland, where leaders talked about things without any action taken. He said: \u201cIt was so boring even I couldn’t bear it,” Gates compared between that conference and a Microsoft event he’d just attended where people were really excited about a new piece of software. “I love getting people excited about software,” he said. “But why can’t we generate even more excitement on taking action for saving lives?”<\/p>\n

Gates argued \u201cThe issue isn’t that people don’t care about the world’s problems, it’s that they don’t know what to do. Even with the Internet and 24-hour TV news, it is still a complex thing to get people to truly see the problem. Using computers, the Internet and breakthroughs in biotechnology, I believe that people can begin to cut through the complex problems of poverty and disease and start to improve lives of people around the world\u201d.<\/p>\n

Gates challenged both HarvardUniversity and its graduating students.<\/p>\n

For Harvard, he encouraged the academics to think about applying more of their resources to dealing with the world’s issues and to ensure that their students are properly educated about global poverty, hunger and the prevalence of curable diseases that continue to kill millions of children all over the world.<\/p>\n

For students, he challenged each of them to focus on one of the world’s issues and become a specialist on it, whether that issue becomes the focus of their career or of a part-time passion. “Don’t let complexity stop you. Be activists, take on the big inequities. Do not think for yourself but think about humanity.
