During my visit to China last month, a professor told me: \u201cToday Chinese students are more ambitious than Japanese and American which is good but if you compare them with students few decades ago, they still have a long way to catch up. With globalization, things are much easier today, more opportunities, more materials, more classes, more books but most students do not know how to appreciate that. People in my generation had to work very hard to overcome hardships with little opportunities. As students, we were sent to do labor works in rural areas, or in factories, and even in the military to rebuild China before we can attended university. Even in top university, there were very few classes, few books, few materials, and few learning opportunities. However our generations overcame these obstacles and make China a strong country today because we all have ambitions and determinations\u201d.<\/p>\n

During my visit to India, a software manager told me:\u201d Ten years ago, I wish that I could study in the U.S. I had good grade in the national exam and got accepted to an U.S university but I could not afford it. My family did not have money to pay for an U.S Education so I had to stay home and study in our local university. At that time, India\u2019s education system was not very good with few universities, few classes, few books and many national exams. The colonial education system was not designed to help India but using more exams to limit number of educated people. Today I can go to the U.S if I want to but there is no reason because U.S education has come to India with more schools, more classes and more books. Globalization has changed everything, especially in education system as many schools are collaborating with U.S universities to bring their best education programs here. This really benefits our younger generation but they do not know how to value it. Ten years ago as university students, we had to share textbooks, ten of us shared one book and each only had few hours to study then had to give the book to others. Today, student has their own books, their own laptop computers, they have internet access to learn more materials, but they do not study hard. Most of them spend time on computer games instead of studying. They do not respect teachers and adapt bad attitude based on what they learn in movies and violent video games. Our generation worked hard to make India strong but younger generation is spoiled by all the wealth that we created for them.<\/p>\n

Both China and India are now prospering in the new global economy and both countries has growth rate exceeding 20% in the past ten years. They have transformed a dominant agriculture economy into an industrial based economy and eventually a technology based economy. Even in this financial crisis, they are still expecting 7% to 9 % growth when most developed countries are lucky if they can manage at 1% to 2% growth rate.\u00a0 It is possible that in a near future, the center of high technology industry could shift to India and China because they are producing more scientists and engineers than any country in the world. Together their universities are graduating millions technical people each year and the standard of living has significantly improved. As I looked at their successes, one thing clearly comes to my mind: The determination of their people, especially their students who are ambitious and motivated to overcome all obstacles to build their underdeveloped countries into powerful economies.<\/p>\n

As a research professor, I have been fortunate to travel extensively in China and India in the past twenty years and experiencing the impact of these two rising economic giants. Just ten years ago, the streets of Beijing were full of bicycles but today it has more cars, especially newer cars than any cities in the U.S or Europe. China has more new buildings, more new restaurants, more new businesses and more than 10,000 software companies operating with more jobs being created everyday. Just ten year ago, nobody in the U.S have even heard of Indian company names such as Infosys TCS, or Wipro but today they are the giants in the software service industry bigger than IBM, bigger than HP and could dominate the service market soon. Today, both China and India are no longer the source of low cost labor anymore but a highly skilled technology countries and fast rising economies, faster than any country in history. There are many books written about the fast rising of these two countries, many focus on government directions, economy policies and foreign investments. There is one key factor that many authors did not mention but I think is the most important: It is their people\u2019s determination and their ambitions to change for the better.<\/p>\n

I agree with my friends in China and India about the ambitions of their generation as well as their efforts to rebuild their economies. However, I believe with proper guidance, they could help leading the younger generation to continue their works. It takes many years for that generation to build a strong economy and it will take many generations working together to maintaining that strength. As long as the younger generation understands and appreciates previous generation\u2019s works, they can continue the efforts to make the economy stronger. The key for both generations to work together is proper education and trainings. The previous generation has done successfully and they should spend time transferring their ambitions to younger generation by educate them to be better persons, better sons and daughters, better professionals, and a better citizens.
