Technology education<\/p>\n

An old friend wrote to me:\u201d I know that technology education is good but our country is poor. We can not compete with other countries like India and China in technology but should remain in agriculture to survive. We should focus more on agriculture education than technology trainings. You probably know an old saying that: \u201cNumber one is the educated, and number two is the farmer, but when there is no rice, then number one is the farmer and number two is the educated\u201d. Agriculture society is our way of life and we should remain that way\u201d.<\/p>\n

As I know my friend is a person with nostalgic sentiment so I wrote back to him and share my opinion with you:<\/p>\n

For thousand years, our country was an agriculture society and food was an important aspect of our life. However, the old saying also means that as people, we are very \u201cpragmatic\u201d and can adjust quickly when thing change. Today thing has changed as the whole world is already changing from agriculture to industrial and from industrial to technology. A society that does not value technology education cannot make progress. A society that cannot make progress cannot grow stronger and be able to compete. A society that cannot compete will not survive. The key to survive in this globalized world is we must be competitive. Of course this is an \u201cuncomfortable feeling\u201d to some but we can not stop progress. We can NOT apply agriculture sentiment thinking to the globalized world. On the contrary, I believe by having technology education we can properly apply scientific methods in agriculture to grow more rice, better rice, have enough foods to feed our people, and also export and compete with other rice growing countries. However we should not focus only in agriculture but must continue our progress on other areas.<\/p>\n

Our country has always had to compete to survive for thousand years but we always have competed in military. That is changing because today we must learn to compete in economy, in business, and most of all, in knowledge and skills. For example, a rice growing farmer earn about $ 600 a year, a newly graduated software engineer is making $ 12000 a year – many times than a farmer. My question is how many young people want to be farmers and how many want to be software engineers? Today, India and China have produced million of engineers each year and many of them are working hard to give their countries a competitive advantage. Other countries such as Philippines, Malaysia, and Thailand are doing the same so we can not be content just to stay in agriculture alone. If we do NOT making progress, we do not \u201cremain the same\u201d but moving backward as other countries are moving forward. For example, the automobile industry started in the U.S and the U.S had dominated the automobile industry for more than 80 years but complacency and the sentiment to \u201cremain the same\u201d had changed it. Today the U.S is no longer dominating the automobile industry anymore. Japan and S. Korea now dominate this industry but others are also moving fast to compete with them. My question is what will be next? The software industry started in the U.S and the U.S has dominated the software industry throughout the world for 30 years but today, as China and India are rapidly making progress so it is interesting to see what will happen.<\/p>\n

In my opinion, software is an easy market to lose because it is so easy to get into software business. This industry does not require significant investments or capital as compare to automobile industry. Anyone with a small computer can start a company and any country that is willing to invest in software education can create a software industry \u2013 I believe competing in this industry is not that difficult. For example, when Bill Gates started Microsoft, he did it with $ 50,000 loan from his father and grew the company to several billion dollars. Narayana Murthy started Infosys with $ 250 to build one of the largest software companies in India. Dr. Liu Jiren, a professor at NorthEasternUniversity in China, started his company by selling his bicycle for $ 20 to create Neusoft, the largest software company in China. Today, Microsoft, Infosys and Neusoft are all giants in the industry, employed hundreds thousand workers and bring significant prosperity to their economies. What happened if Bill Gates continued his study in Harvard and become a Lawyer? What happened if Narayana Murthy stayed at Patni Company as an office administration? What happened if Dr. Liu Jiren continued to teach computer science at NorthEasternUniversity?<\/p>\n

During a lunch with Narayana Murthy at his house in Bangalore few years ago, he told me: \u201cWhen I started Infosys in 1981, I had no money but lot of hope because I believed that software will become very big for India. I was very fortunate that my wife agreed with me and she sold her jewelry that she had as wedding dowry for about $ 1000 rupee ($ 250 dollars) so we could buy an old personal computer and began the company\u201d. The first time, I met Dr. Liu Jiren in his office at Neusoft in 2004; I noticed a very old bicycle next to his modern desk. He explained to me that when he was a professor, he and his friends wrote a software application for a small company in town and they gave him this bicycle in return. At that time, having a bicycle was a big thing because that was the only transportation for most people as they are very poor. He had to share this bicycle with six others people in his family but he had a vision about technology and how it could improve the economy. Since he could not convince anyone to loan him money, he had to \u201cpawn\u201d the bicycle to get $20 to buy a modem to connect university computer to a network so he can write software applications to customers in other cities. When he made enough money and started Neusoft, he got his bicycle back and kept in his office as a reminder of that time.<\/p>\n

What Bill Gates, Narayana Murthy and Liu Jiren had in common is a strong belief in technology and a vision that technology will make a difference. They also believe in investment in technology education as the best thing that they can do. Bill Gates spent a large sum of his money for education purpose and his BillGatesBuilding in CarnegieMellonUniversity is one example. Narayana Murthy created InfosysUniversity to train his Infosys workers. Dr. Liu Jiren established NeusoftUniversity which has location in several large cities throughout China to educate young people about software.<\/p>\n

I believe technology education is an important thing and it should not be just for young people, for students but for everybody. I believe that the most successful society in the next five or ten years will be a society where education is valued and people who have ability to learn will continue to learn new things. Success in the Information Age will be defined NOT by what people already know but by their ability to adjust to changes and learn new things.\u00a0 As students, you must make a conscious decision to become a lifelong learner. Do NOT allow yourself to become a person who quit learning. Opportunities will go to individuals who have the capability to adapt and to be flexible. As students, you must learn to add value to our society and contribute more to build our country strong. New knowledge and skills adds more value to you so you can be competitive. You must think of the kind of person that you would want to become. I am convinced that the \u201cFuture Bill Gates\u201d will NOT be in the U.S but somewhere else. It could be in China, it could be in India, and it could be in Vietnam. Are you that kind of person? Are you willing to become that person?<\/p>\n
