During an alumni meeting in November, several former students came to see me. As they told me about their jobs and their works, I asked them about \u201cTeamwork\u201d. They told me that they have worked in team to build software but as I asked more questions, it seemed that they have worked \u201cwithin a group\u201d but NOT \u201cwithin a Team\u201d.<\/p>\n

I asked: \u201cEveryday, when you go to work do you know what others in your team are working on?\u201d, \u201cWhat part of the program is the person who sits next to you doing?\u201d, \u201cWhat does the quiet person in your team contribute to the project? How many projects is your boss working on?\u201d Most of them could not answer these questions even they worked together in the same project.<\/p>\n

As a team, it is important to share information and it is important to know what other team members are working on and how they feel they are doing with it. It is important to let everybody know what you are doing and whether you need help or not. We are learning when we work together as we both teach each others and learn from each others. That is what \u201cWorking within a team\u201d means. This is probably the most important purpose of \u201cTeaming\u201d as people discuss what everyone else in the group is working on regardless of their positions and experiences.<\/p>\n

I recommend that every morning, the team sets aside half-hour meeting where each person should say what they are working on at the moment and how they feel they are doing with it. Basically it is a way to knows each other\u2019s work, which may lead to more details and help identify issues, if any, within the team. As this discussion is going, people feel easier to talk about problems with each other. It also means if someone develops something that is good, we all know about it. As someone is proud of something that they have done then by discussing it gives them a feeling that they are appreciated. And if someone is having problem, the team can offer encouragement or suggest a few ideas in the meeting.<\/p>\n

In spite of various text books written about workplace formality, I think nobody likes to work in a place where they can NOT talk to each others and problems must be reported to the manager only and NOT to be shared with anyone. \u201cTeamwork\u201d in the workplace may NOT be the same thing as working with friends. You do NOT need to go to the movies, sing \u201cKaraoke\u201d, or play computer games together but you do need a team where everyone is comfortable to say when they are having problems and need help and knows they will be helped NOT \u201cLaughed at\u201d. You do not need to share the personal life with team members but if you are having problems personally you should be able to say so and have people offer sympathy. Basically \u201cTeamwork\u201d in the workplace is \u201cPeople that work together and get along well\u201d.<\/p>\n

Teamwork is also a place to learn new skills. When you do not know something, you must ask and there will be someone who knows better than you to help you. In Teamwork, everyone in the group brings different experiences and has something to teach each others. For the people who have experiences, this is the chance to help and demonstrate their leadership and friendship. They also get a chance to practice at explaining something to their team and this develops better communication skills. By teaching someone, they will also benefit themselves because teaching is also a chance to reviewing on what they know. By sharing information everyday, the team has a chance to step back from focusing on particular task to see the \u201cbig picture\u201d. People can find out what their team members are doing and how it relates to what they are doing, so everybody has better idea what they are contributing to the project. By sharing and working together, the team can evaluate any decisions that were made and actions people need to perform after the meeting is done.<\/p>\n

Today \u201cteamwork\u201d is NOT encouraged in some schools but it is changing. Students do NOT have to wait to go to work to build team. I believe students should form team and sharing information with each others today.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
