The dark side of technology<\/p>\n

There has been much written about the success of the IT outsourcing industry in India, most of it from the economic viewpoint such as the $ 85 billion dollars export in 2008 and several million high tech jobs created. India’s IT outsourcing is a successful model that many developing countries want to adopt but there is a dark side of this success that is NOT normally mentioned.<\/p>\n

As the IT industry\u2019s growth stronger, software people are experiencing more workload, longer working hours, pressure to complete projects before deadlines, required travels oversea away from families, and unhealthy food and irregular eating habits, .<\/p>\n

Last year, the India’s Health Ministry published a report that India is facing an “obesity crisis” among its newly wealthy software workers as millions of its poor people still struggle for enough food to eat. The report mentioned that as the country becomes richer, more people are becoming fatter with bad eating habit, and like Westerners, they are seeking medical help.<\/p>\n

The growth of IT industry also contributes to increase work pressure, increase need for job performance, and increase stress. This is evidence on the report that heart disease have increased 10 to 15 times in the past ten years, and the average age a person that suffer from heart attack in India is in the 30s with many young people in the 20s even died of heart diseases.<\/p>\n

In addition to health issues, there were over three thousand cases of software workers filed for divorce in Bangalore each year. The report also mentioned that other high tech cities like Hyderabad, Chennai, and Mumbai also have similar situations. As software people are working harder and making more money they usually spent freely in restaurants, bars, massage, and dancing clubs and these \u201centertainment areas\u201d are booming in every high tech city. These activities also led to breakup of family, the breakup of moral, breakup of traditional culture with increasing in domestic violence, where husbands beat wives, young people beat their elderly parents. It is difficult to imagine these things could happen in a culture where family harmony and respecting parents are the norm. All of these can be attributed to the fast changing lifestyle caused by new wealthy young people adopting western style culture.<\/p>\n

Of course there are benefits of the IT industry, but it is important to recognize that there are dark sides accompanying any bright sides and everything has a price. The price that India and many developing countries are paying today is the result of quickly adopting \u201cwestern movies\u201d style into their daily life without any preparation. Many people do not understand that Technology with all the wonderful things that it promises can not bring true happiness in life because it is only a tool to use and people should not allow the tool to control their life. I believe besides teaching technology innovation in school we need to balance it with traditional ethic, moral and personal responsibilities.\u00a0 I believe that good education is the best defense against these social issues. We must teach filial respect in elementary school, loyalty and humanity in secondary school, and at the university level students should learn not only professional skills but a sense of personal responsibility for improving the world they live in.<\/p>\n
