Hot Jobs, Cold jobs<\/p>\n

I have received several emails about how to get jobs in this difficult time, especially from students who graduated in fields of study that are difficult to find works. Some asked me about how to get jobs in the \u201cHOT\u201d area such as software engineering, Information Technology, Healthcare and some even asked how to get jobs with global companies.<\/p>\n

As a professor, I always ask first year students when they arrive at universities “What are you going to do with your field of study?” The fact is many of them do NOT know. Some told me that they selected a field because they did well in that field in high school. Other told me that they choose it because their friends choose it or sometime their parents want them to study it. Only few students know exactly what they want to do with their field of study. Selecting an appropriate \u201cfield of study\u201d will help you to prepare for a career in a specific area and maximize your education investment. Of course you should NOT select a field of study that you do NOT like or select a field because somebody wants you to study it or because your friends select them. You must make the decision based on YOUR OWN INTEREST after carefully evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of that field. However, you also should consider the \u201cPractical factor\u201d as it will have significant impact on you and your future.<\/p>\n

It is possible that you may change your mind after a few months in university as many students do. However you should not change your mind often since \u201ctime and costs\u201d are critical in your investment because education is the most serious investment that you made in your life. It is not difficult to change study field in the first or second year but by the time you go to third year, it maybe too late. However, it is possible to take additional courses to get more knowledge for pursuing a new field of study. A student graduated in history can work for government, journalism with minimum training but it will take additional trainings to work in business, scientific, or software fields. Before you think about what you’re going to do with your field of study, you need to know what you can do with your field of studies.<\/p>\n

For students in Business area, the best way to get jobs in software industry is to take additional classes in Information System Management because this field is the bridge between software engineering and business. This field does not focus too much on technical aspect like software engineering but it gives enough training on how to manage information technology in a business environment. Graduate in this field will work as information system manager and this is one of the top HOT jobs with high demand today.<\/p>\n

For students in Biological or Life Sciences area, the best way to get good jobs is to focus on Nursing, Medical technology, and Medical administration areas. Your undergraduate degree can prepare you for a career in the rapidly-growing healthcare industry, it also qualifies you to work as a laboratory assistant, Medical technician, Life Science technologist or research assistant.<\/p>\n

For students in Foreign Language area: The good jobs are translators working for foreign companies that need people with multiple foreign languages skills; Working at museums, travel and tourism industry, teaching foreign languages is also a popular choice for foreign language graduates.<\/p>\n

Whatever your field of study, keep your options open by taking additional courses in other areas to broaden your knowledge and skills, doing part-time work in the area of interest and keep up with the latest information on industry trends. Involve yourself in industry events and get to know other professionals who can give you advice and references. And when someone asks you about what you’re going to do with your field of study, do not answer that you are going to stay in that area but instead, tell them that you have a variety of options to pursue, and you don’t want to narrow them down quite yet. Keep it flexible and continue to explore other options.<\/p>\n
