The other sides of technology<\/p>\n

Last week I had lunch with a professor in sociology. He told me: “In this financial crisis, many people lost their jobs and the unemployment is at the highest level in many years. Hundred thousands people have been out of work for over a year and if things do not improve soon, they will never be able to recover as their jobs will be taken by younger people soon.”<\/p>\n

I asked him: “Why do you think like that?” He said: “We must look at the skills need in order to succeed in the workplace today. Almost everything requires computer skills and young people are more skilled in computer than older people. Most companies prefer to hire younger workers because they have the skills, work harder, and have lower salaries than people with many years of experiences. In the past few years, I have seen number of basic computer courses being offered risen dramatically. Courses on how to use Microsoft Offices packages are always full as many workers are learning computer as more jobs need these skills. In most business, people must have this skill to stay employ because knowing about computer mean a matter of keeping jobs or NOT keeping jobs. If you look at most job requirements today, they all require computer skills. Technology innovation and change are transforming everything at an incredible rate. Most businesses are harnessing the power of computer to stay competitive. Today few businesses can survive without computer and most government jobs are also relying significantly on computer. All of these create a vast change in our society. Computer has become accessible to more people together with the internet, they change the way people work and do business.<\/p>\n

I told him: \u201cI am glad to see that computer is so popular today. Fifty years ago, a computer is something very special and people who know computer is considered very \u201csmart\u201d but today, almost everybody can use computer including young children. I have seen children at the age of five or seven already know how to use computer\u201d.<\/p>\n

He seemed agree with my observation: \u201cMy concern is with the current education system, we teach people to use computer but do not teach them to understand the limitation of information that it bring. For everything seems that good there is also bad thing too. Many people use computer for games, bad websites, and learn bad habits. If basic knowledge skills and common sense are not taught well, how can young people are expected to know what is right and what is wrong? We can not teach the use of a tool such as computer alone but we must teach them about ethics, moral, and social responsibilities. Have you heard of an experiment called \u201cThe hole in the Wall\u201d?<\/p>\n

I told him: \u201cNo, I never heard of such thing\u201d. He explained: \u201cFew years ago, Dr. Sugata Mitra, a Professor at Newcastle University, England created an experiment called “The Hole in the Wall” in which he placed several computers in Indian slums at Delhi, India and allowed poor children to freely use them. The slum is the place where the poorest of the poor in India live, most of them do not even know how to read or write. Of course their children also do not read or write either because they never even go to school. Even today, India has the highest number of uneducated children among developing countries where many do not attending school. After 6 months of playing with computers, over thousand of children know how to use computers without any formal training. They help each other to learn how to boot up, download, and access a number of limited websites controlled by software within computers. This experiment proved that children can teach themselves to use computer without any instruction.<\/p>\n

Dr. Mitra wanted to see how far this \u201clearning-without-guidance\u201d could be stretched so he loaded up computers with information on biology and left them in the slum for a couple of months. The end result was so incredible because these children who could not go to school but could talk to him about DNA, cell structures, biology processes and other complex topics that even many educated adult were not even be aware of. He concluded that even very young children, never go to school, do not know how to read or write, but only watching education websites on the internet can learn about gens, DNA, can talk about that with Biology professors from England.<\/p>\n

Dr Mitra loaded computers with mathematics and problem solving tests and within few months, these poor children were discussing algebra, linear equations and were able to solve some simple math problems without knowing even the basic mathematics. After successful experiment in India, Dr Mitra has also tried similar experiments in England and proved that 8 to-10-year-old children can easily handle school level exam questions designed for 16-year olds, providing the teacher allowed the children using the computer loaded with education programs similar to his original slum experiments in India. Dr Mitra concluded that by allowing children find the answers using the internet and make them work in small groups that encourage cooperation, some pressure, and a desire to do better and know more than others, than children will learn because learning is the basic intuition at that early age.<\/p>\n

I told him: \u201cThat is great, what a wonderful idea\u201d. My friend seemed sad, he concluded: \u201cThat was Dr. Mitra\u2019s experiment and he had proved his theory about learning. However there is another side of the experiment that many people do not know. When these children learned about computer and internet, they become addict to it. When the experiment was over, when Dr. Mitra\u2019s computers were taken away, these children started to go to caf\u00e9 internet to learn more. Of course, computers at the Caf\u00e9 Internet do not have the same education software of Dr. Mitra but other kind of software such as computer games and web browser that allow them to go to bad websites full of violent, sexual scenes, etc. The results were worst than you can imagine. The slum was already a very bad place but now it is full of violent as more and more children were exposed to bad influence from all kind of social problems. With computer games full of violent and sexual scenes, children become more aggressive and easy to be recruited by criminals. Many poor parents do not understand why their children suddenly behave so badly. Technology is wonderful but there is a price that you must pay too. If you know the limitation, provide proper guidance then it would provide significant benefits but without additional trainings, without proper guidance then it could become nightmares.<\/p>\n
