With all the uncertainty of today job market, most U.S schools advise their incoming students: \u201cIf you want to have a high-paying job when you graduated, study technology areas such as Software Engineer, Computer Science or Information Systems Management\u201d. This year, most universities from U.S to Europe report that more students are discovering that their job prospects are much better and their starting salaries are higher if they have technology-related degrees. Leading universities report that enrollment in computer science and software engineering courses are up significantly as compare to the last ten years. More and more students are dropping out business and finance fields and switch to computer and technology.<\/p>\n

For several years, US government has made it clear that technology and computer are growing fields, but the message fells into deaf ears as students are pursuing business degrees with the hope of making a lot of money in stock market and investment banking. Finally, because of the financial recession, that message is getting back to students and their parents. Throughout the economic downturn, companies are still hiring computer science, software engineering and information systems graduates but stop hiring business graduates. Last spring, at the height of the recession, top technology schools such as MIT, Stanford, Carnegie Mellon and Georgia Technology were having the highest job placement rate and the highest starting salary. These schools reported that they had placed 97% of their students in jobs within three months of graduation as more and more technology and non-technology companies are interested in technology students. The starting salary of these students have an average of $72,000 per year, the highest of any starting salary ever as the shortage of technology people began several years ago.<\/p>\n

The message about solid job prospects and high starting salaries for technology majors is resonating well with students and their parents. At StanfordUniversity, the number of students declaring themselves as computer science majors is up 40% from last year. The university attributes this rise partly to the fact that business degree is no longer the \u201cdream degree\u201d anymore as more business students could not get jobs and switch to software engineering and computer science. In the challenging economic times, many students consider technology a safer choice than risking the prospect of working for banks or financial companies. The interest in technology courses is especially strong among students as there are more new degrees in computer -related majors being offered such as Computational biology, Computational medicine, Bio computation and Bio technology and these new emerging fields become the next \u201chot jobs\u201d. With new breakthroughs in medicine and pharmaceutical number of students in biology or chemistry now sees computer science and software engineer as new playing fields with much better prospects.<\/p>\n

As more businesses are using computer for competitive advantage, Information Systems Management (ISM) is becoming a next \u201cHot degree\u201d for business students who few years ago may have pursued lucrative jobs in investment banking at Wall Street. Today, all banking, finance and stock brokers are computerized so ISM is one of the hottest areas among business students. This trend will continue for the next five years, according to U.S government forecasting as more businesses are switching into automation and computer network applications to do business globally.<\/p>\n

This year, CarnegieMellonUniversity has received a record number of applications for undergraduate admission with 26,431 applications for 1,400 available spots. This marks a 16 percent increase over the previous record. Michael Steidel, director of admission said: “It’s great to know that even in times of great economic uncertainty, the desire to pursue an education remains strong and Carnegie Mellon’s balance of innovation and technical degree programs provides students with a great set of innovative skills, which serve them well in their careers. One reason applications are up at CMU’s program over others is due to the higher starting salaries. The median starting salary for most 2009 CMU graduates was $105,000 which is much higher than the national average.<\/p>\n

Enrollment in technology programs has been rising fast when parents and students stopped worrying that company are outsourcing IT functions resulting in less demand for computer scientists or software engineers, The good news is there is a critical shortage of technology degrees all over the world, even India and China also do not have enough technical talents for their own.
