Selecting a Filed of study<\/p>\n

Selecting a field of study is a critical choice when student transition from high school to college. It requires careful planning and often difficult decisions. Only few students know what they want to study but most students do NOT know which field of study is good for them or what career they should pursue. Some let parents make decisions for them. Some follow advises of friends. Some would select something that they do well in high school and hope that they would do well in university. Many change field of study several times when they did not do well during their times in universities.<\/p>\n

As students, you need to take time to evaluate your strengths and weaknesses, to identify the subjects and activities that you enjoy as well as your goals in life. Think about the kind of work you would like to do, the place where you want to work, and the salary level that you want to seek. You need to gather information about yourself such as your interests, your skills, your preferences, your development needs, your roles and your value in life. People that know their strengths and apply them in their careers are more successful than people who do not know much about themselves. By knowing yourself, you can identify possible fields of study to determine which would be best for you and evaluate these areas carefully as well as any alternatives for your options. This will be your career plan that will guide you to select your field of study.<\/p>\n

You need to discuss your career plans with your parents, teachers, and friends to find out which career would most likely be the best choice. If you still are not sure, try to talk to people who are working on that field for more information. Ask them about the nature of their works, the working conditions, the training required, the job market, and what they like and dislike about their works. Then compare their answers with your expectations. You may want to investigate the education and training required and discuss with other students who are studying in that areas for more information before narrow your choice to a few.<\/p>\n

After having a few areas of interest, you may check the job market. I called it \u201cReality checks\u201d. There are areas that you may like to study but if the job is limited then you may want to reconsider. Job opportunities is one important elements in career decision making. The global economy opens many opportunities in some areas but also makes it more difficulty to other areas. As students, you need to look at the job market forecasting that may help you in assessing future demand for specific jobs and make decision on which field of study would be best for you.<\/p>\n

Of course, many students will have to deal with the issue of \u201cwell intentioned parents\u201d try to choose a career for them without much regard for their children\u2019s preferences and skills. This can put significant strain on the relationships and can be a source of frustration. However, your parents would be very interested when they find out that you have spent time to prepare for a career plan with enough information to help you making decision. This is the time to share with them on your career plans, listen to their views, discuss with them about your future as well as your strengths and weaknesses.<\/p>\n

It is very important to keep perspective on things. More important than the successes and failures is the way in which you react to them. You should be thankful to your parents and humble in your own achievements. You should also be patient in every situation and learn to listen attentively because everybody has something to say. If need, you should explain your position carefully and with clarity, keep your emotion in check, as it is your future, your career, your field of study that you have carefully evaluated before draw any conclusion. However, you DO want to keep all options open as things will always change.<\/p>\n
