Thirty years ago, many software developers made money by writing software to run on personal computers (PC) and created thousand of software companies but it all changed when company like Microsoft dominated the market. Ten years ago, many software developers also made money by writing software for the Internet and created thousand of \u201cDot.Com\u201d companies but it all changed when companies like eBay, Amazon, and few others dominate the market. Today there is a new opportunity in the mobile applications or mobile web.<\/p>\n

Few years ago, most mobile phones have had web browsers but they are difficult to use. If you have tried to navigate some web page written poorly in Java-script, in tiny phone screen, to find information such as an address or a schedule, you probably understand how frustrating and difficult it could be. However, it all changed with the iPhone.<\/p>\n

When a technology gets big enough to form an industry and allow other to write applications on top of it, then it create an \u201copportunity revolution\u201d (Similar to the PC and the Internet). The iPhone is an application platform that allows many applications to run on it. Today, there are thousands of applications for the iPhone, each sell for about a few dollars but they all have million users download them. For a one dollar application with one million users then the application developer can make a million dollars easily.<\/p>\n

Consider the very short time of the iPhone; it has created a new industry with thousand developers all over the world writing applications for it. According to the new industry report, Apple iPhone leads the market by having over 150,000 applications compare with just 20,000 for the Google\u2019s Android. The report also stated that for 99 cents per application download, Taputous, a company with 20-people that makes games and social software for the iPhone, is now making $1 million each month for the past ten months. Of course, not every company can be that successful, but most do pretty well with iPhone, according to the report.<\/p>\n

Today, as more and more people are using mobile devices than laptop and PC, this trend will continue. My friend writes news for the university website but he add some plug-in so students can read it from their mobile phones. He told me that he has over ten thousand people download his technical news blog every week. Today, as more mobile devices getting better, you do not need to optimize your website for mobile, since the mobile browsers work fine with normal web sites. Of course, if you want your site to be better for mobile users, you still need to customized content for them.<\/p>\n

Today both Apple and Google have their own store to sell their mobile applications. Google goes further by allowing people to write any application they want for Android, and upload it to the app store without any third-party arbitration or contract. Apple, on the other hand, has an approval policy. Steve Jobs wants to have an arbitrary decision to remove sexual applications or malcontent applications for his iPhone. This may make some developers NOT very happy because they do not like to be censored but Apple want to be \u201cFamily oriented\u201d phone for everybody. With such a strong market share and making lot of money for developers, others would be happy to do what Steve Jobs asks them.<\/p>\n

The next competition could be Microsoft\u2019s phone. With the mobile edition of Windows 7, there will be more competitions in the mobile phone market as Microsoft\u2019s position is linking the phone into services such as Xbox Live, which will allow people who to play video games on mobile devices. As Microsoft is still working on the new mobile phone to come out soon, it puts Microsoft behind the competition. However, for many software developer this is the chance to participate in the new market, new opportunity whether you choose the iPhone, Android, or Microsoft, mobile application could open up new opportunity for many of you.
