Software as a Service (SaaS)<\/p>\n

Today, software is a major force that supporting and driving every aspects of business. To buy \u201cCommercial of the shelf\u201d (COTS) software packages such as Microsoft Office, SAP, or Peoplesoft, companies have to spend a lot of money for their licenses and pay more to implement the software on their own systems. Once the software is installed, companies have to pay for the training so their people can use the software and establish a group to manage and maintain these softwares. All of these could add up to a lot of money and every few years, software companies would release a newer version of the software then everything could start again with more money goes to software vendor companies.<\/p>\n

The concept of Software as a Service (SaaS) begins few years ago as an alternative to buying these softwares. It is based on a principle that software can be hosted on the vendor\u2019s system provided to customers across the Internet, therefore eliminate the need to install and run the software on the customer’s systems as well as the costs of software maintenance, operation, and support. With this concept, customer does not own the software but \u201crents\u201d it and it is much cheaper. Companies can also save more money because they do not have to buy additional hardwares or establish a group to maintain it. In the time of financial difficulty, many companies like to reducing costs so \u201cSoftware as a Service\u201d is becoming a very popular business proposition and gains significant supports. However SaaS has both advantages and disadvantages:<\/p>\n

The advantages of SaaS are lower cost, take less time to install, implement and upgrades. Because the software belongs to vendor companies, they have to maintain and upgrade so customer is always using the most recent version of the software product.<\/p>\n

The disadvantages of SaaS are customers do not have direct control over data storage and the security of the hosted vendor. Customers should be concern with their data in case they are lost or stolen. What happen if hackers get in and steal all important company information? What happen if the vendor\u2019s system crash? What happen if the vendor goes out of business? Of course, SaaS companies have to work hard to address this concern with their firewalls, encryption techniques, socket security features, intrusion-detection systems and other protections. However, it still depends on the professional and integrity of them to guarantee security and safety. Some may not be adequate if customers have a lot of sensitive data, such as financial, proprietary or confidential informations.<\/p>\n

In general, SaaS work well for common functions that are simple, standard, transactional type such as Customer Relation Management (CRM), Supply Chain Management (SCM), Sales, Marketing, Warehousing, and not highly dependent on or integrated with other business functions.\u00a0 But if customer needs to create special software, highly customized and integrated such as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Business Intelligence (BI) then SaaS may not work well. Whether own or rent, software integration is never easy. The integration of SaaS solution with other in house systems can be very difficult and take longer especially complex integration can be a significant challenge for companies that want to use SaaS because they don\u2019t have access to the source code, which they need to make the hosted system interface with their internal systems.<\/p>\n

Of course, most SaaS applications are well designed for interoperability. Because the vendors have to create software that many different companies can easily hook into, they pay close attention to the things that can make integration easier, such as data exchanges and application programming interfaces.<\/p>\n

SaaS is good if the company is using applications that the vendor is going to update frequently with changes and functionality enhancements.
