THE new boss of Microsoft\u2019s online-services is Qi Lu, a Carnegie Mellon graduate. Even he grew up in poverty in rural China, he managed to enter Shanghai\u2019s FudanUniversity where he graduated in computer science and became a lecturer in software technology. He impressed a visiting Carnegie Mellon professor and was offered a scholarship to study at CarnegieMellonUniversity. After several years he graduated with a PhD and joined Yahoo!, wher<\/p>\n

e he led the development of Yahoo\u2019s search and advertising technology.<\/p>\n

His talent is widely recognized among the technology world so Microsoft would like to hire him but it is difficult because he is one of the top talents that have exclusive employment contract with Yahoo. Most technology companies do have special contract with their key people to prevent them from leaving so Microsoft decided to \u201cbuy Yahoo\u201d to get their best talents. With the special collaboration contract between Yahoo and Microsoft, Qi Lu is given a new challenge: Take on Google in the online search and advertising business.\u00a0 How well he and his group can do it will have a big impact, not only on Microsoft, but on the entire online industry.<\/p>\n

The first thing Qi Lu did is to return to Carnegie Mellon to staff his team because catching up with Google will take years, and a lot of talents. However, Qi Lu is confident because what he has is a network of top students at Carnegie Mellon. He explains: \u201cWe need to have faster rate of innovation. That only come from people with talent and at Carnegie Mellon we have many due to the best technical education here\u201d.<\/p>\n

Typically, search engines look at the words being searched for, and listed web pages that contained them. Google\u2019s algorithm was to make results relevant by counting the number of links to each web page containing the words and putting pages with the most links at the top of the search results. However, Qi Lu wants to do something better by redesign Microsoft\u2019s search engine with new algorithms to take advantage of the users\u2019 interests rather than just links. Instead of releasing a new version of a program every couple of years, he focuses on a perpetual cycle of product improvement and instantaneous user feedback. A search\u2019s engineers must constantly sift through data collected online, come up with new things on improve performance and results by understand user intent.<\/p>\n

Last year, Microsoft launched its new search service \u201cBing\u201d. The idea that Qi Lu believes that it will change the way people search the web. Bing is not just help people find things online, it is also meant to help them make decisions. For example, to facilitate the purchase of a new laptop, Bing does not simply list websites that sell laptop, but aggregates links to reviews, price comparisons and pictures on a single page. Qi Lu intends to improve Bing continuously by allow users to search the latest tweets with boxes that pop up next to the results for searches involving famous people or places, with information on local hotels, say, or on a musician\u2019s lyrics. Bing is also working on adding more news and other content providers for exclusive rights to link to their search.<\/p>\n

Since the arrival at Microsoft, Qi Lu and his Carnegie Mellon team have improved the share of Microsoft\u2019s Search in America by 11%. Google has been forced to react by introducing more features, some of them similar to Bing. Even Bing has gained market share in America but outside the U.S, Bing is still unknown.
