Industry trends<\/p>\n

According to the latest industry forecast, global information technology spending will grow by 6% in 2010, raising worldwide technology investments to $3.4 trillion and continue to go up in the next five years. In past years, many companies stopped spending due to the financial crisis but beginning this year, as the economy improves, many companies start to spend more to meet their needs. The good new is information technology is leading all spending.<\/p>\n

Data in the past three months of 2010 found that personal computers sale has increased significantly, an indicator that the software industry begins to recover, companies like Intel, Microsoft, Google and Oracle will probably do well and will hire more. However, the problem is the shortage of software skill workers in the U.S especially in the advanced areas such as software engineering, software architecture, network security, project management, data integration, and requirements analysis. According to several studies, many companies will have to bring more software workers to the U.S via the H1B program or outsource software design, programming, and testing to other lower costs countries. The outsourcing market is predicted to be $200 Billion in 2010 and $ 300 Billion in 2015. With both India and China are experiencing shortage of skilled workers, it will open more opportunities to other countries that have abundant of skilled software workers. Five countries on top of the outsourcing list are Brazil, Malaysia, Philippines, Mexico and Vietnam.<\/p>\n

Industry data also indicated that computing hardware spend will also rise this year, with storage growing the fastest, as companies are buying more servers than ever before. The trend also indicates that many companies will begin their own private cloud infrastructures, taking full advantage of virtualized hardware, and increasingly sophisticated tools to optimize the use of that hardware. Virtualization companies are increasingly interested in developing products that can be used to more efficiently manage virtualized environments. Companies such as VMware offer software that automatically patches virtual machines, and moves around between physical servers in the event of a failure.<\/p>\n

Cloud computing is likely to be a hot jobs in the next few years. Understanding how it works, know how to manage this type of work will put software people at an advantage, especially as more companies move into areas such as virtual desktop integration. It will also require expertise in network security, project management, system architecture and networking.
