The time and effort that you put in the next four years will help you moving toward a better future if you make the right decision.<\/p>\n

As students, you have several choices to select the field that is best suite to your ability and your personal aspiration. Beside that, you also need to look at the market situation and the prospect of finding something that you can build a career on. Selecting the right career requires information about the opportunities that a particular occupation may provide. I know many students quickly select some fields of study then later find out that these fields do not meet their goals. Many change study fields in middle of the school year and create financial burdens to their families.<\/p>\n

While selecting a field of study may start with a dream, achieving academic success requires much more than just a dream. You have to work hard, you have to set your career goal and moving toward that goal. There will be time that you feel desperate and there will be time that you will feel uncomfortable with your choice but if you willing to put in your time, your efforts, and your diligence, the reward is endless. No one would say college life is easy; no one would say college life is full of joy, but college life is the time for you to mature, to learn, and to shape your character as you are building your future.<\/p>\n

As a professor in software engineering, I would like to share with you some additional information about this field. From U.S government forecasts, software field is projected to be one of the fastest growing occupations in the next five to ten years. Rapid growth in this area could open more opportunities for college graduates with at least a bachelor\u2019s degree in software engineering, computer science, or information systems management. Companies around the world are hiring software people with strong programming, systems design, and business skills. Despite the global economic downturn, employment in software is still expected to increase faster than all other occupations. As more businesses adopt and integrate new technologies to maximize their efficiency, more software people will be needed. Competition among global companies will create more demand for technological innovations, and organizations will need more software engineers to implement these new technologies. Today, the expanding of Internet technologies has created an explosive growth in e-commerce, e-government and more businesses are conducted on the Internet. These trends trigger a very high demand for software engineers who can develop Internet, intranet, and World Wide Web applications. Other areas such as telecommunications such as mobile phone, smart phone continue to expand and demand more software engineers to implement mobile applications. Due to the declining enrollment in technology and engineering in the past ten years in the U.S and Europe, there is a critical shortage of software people. Many companies have to outsource works to foreign countries with highly technical skilled workers. This open up many opportunities for economic growth in developing countries. For example, India software outsourcing industry has earned over 80 billion dollar in 2009 and employed over 2.5 million software people. Ten years ago, Indian software companies like Infosys, TCS or Wipro were relative unknown but today they are the largest software companies in the world, bigger than IBM or Microsoft. Software outsourcing has became a key driver for job creation and economic growth for many countries from Europe to Asia, from Africa to South America. According to several studies, the world will need more than a million software workers each year for the next ten year but despite many countries\u2019 effort to improve their software workforce, it will not be easy because the key investment is education and current educations systems will not be able to change quickly enough to meet that demand.<\/p>\n

Today the median salaries of entry level software engineers in the U.S is $75,000. The middle level is $90,000 and specialized skilled engineer could earned $120,000. For people with a master degree, they could add another $6,000 to $10,000 more to their salaries. Apart from the salary, many software engineers may also have the option of company stock or be provided with a company car as long as they stay with the company.<\/p>\n
