Reading habit<\/p>\n

If there is one thing that every college student must learn quickly then it is developing good reading habit. There are lot of reading materials in college, especially in advanced classes (Third and fourth-year and higher degree programs such as MS and Ph.D). Without good reading skills, they easily fall behind and could fail achieving their goals.<\/p>\n

When a student fall behind in class and could not catch up, I always suspect that the student do not have a good reading habit. In schools that are using the \u201cActive learning\u201d method, students must always read assignments before coming to class. If they do not, they often fall behind.<\/p>\n

When you read before class, you understand the structure of the lecture and are able to identify what are the key points that you need to know and focus on them. By the time you come to class, you are ready to learn more by paying attention during the lecture and asking questions on something that you do not understand. In active learning, the discussion, the questions answering are the key parts of the learning process. Of course, it is easy to participate when you know something or have some opinions. It allows you to ask good questions and learn more than just sit there and passively listening.<\/p>\n

Technical materials (Especially math, science, technology) are not easy to read. Unfortunately many students do not know the difference and often try to read these assigned reading as if it is a novel from beginning to end and having difficulty to understand. Basically, technical reading requires different method.<\/p>\n

Every technical material often has a preface or a short introduction at the beginning. This is the essential information that allows you to get the author’s objectives and structure of the materials. It provides an overview and background information. You must first read the preface several times to really understand the author’s objective before going into more details. The preface is the road map that the author explains the ideas and organization of the entire materials.<\/p>\n

Technical materials reading often require few times to read, not just once. I often advice students to quickly read through the materials to understand the structure. On the second time, you focus more on the concepts by taking short notes as you read to summarize what you know. After reading, review your notes to identify the flow of the information to see if you understand the materials well. After reading the note, quickly reread the materials the third times to ensure that you cover all materials. You must think about what you have read, and if needed add more notes based on your understanding. Your goal is to have notes that are concise, capture the reading so you are ready to go to class and learn more. When you listen to the teacher explain the materials, you can add more notes or mark the important areas in the note so you can review them later. By following a good reading habit and read materials before go to class, you have much better chance to comprehend the materials as your notes will allow you to quickly review the materials before the exams.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
