In today\u2019s competitive job market, knowledge and skills are more important than ever. Companies are flooded with many applicants so they can be selective to hire the best candidates possible. Your knowledge is what you can distinguish yourselves to others because when you have the right skills, the competition becomes irrelevant. In essence, your skills highlights those qualities that separate you from the rest, clearly demonstrating what it is you can do better than others.<\/p>\n

Of course, before you can take advantage of the competitive edge, you must know what your skills are and what the market demands. This is really a supply and demand law so you must put the time and effort into discovering the market needs, what is hot and what is not. If you do not know what skills you must have or what you want to be known for then it is hard for company to know you or hires you. For example, if you can program in Java and C++ but there are thousand people who could do the same then you are not much different from them. However if you can program Java and C++ in several platforms such as Window, Unix, and mobile platforms then you can distinguish yourself from the rest. If you look at most universities\u2019 curricula, they are almost the same as all students are taking the same courses then you need to select special courses or additional trainings that can clearly distinguish you from others. A student who has additional trainings in software design, system architect will have much better to get hired than those who can only program. A student who takes special courses such as Software project management, Networking security will be looked at more favorable than those who only have the basic computer courses.<\/p>\n

Many students only follow the \u201cRoutine job search\u201d rather than having a \u201cStrategic job search\u201d. They believe that if company wants resume then I will send them a resume. They do not understand that what the company needs is someone who can solve problems for them, supporting them, provide solution for them and not just anybody with a resume. A \u201cstrategic job search\u201d starts with a self-evaluation to thoroughly define who you are, what you have, and where you want to go with your career. They need to know what they would stand for, what their strengths are, what their competencies are, basically their personality. Many students do not know how to do self-evaluation so I told them to think of their favorite class in school, what kind of things that make them excited and what are things that they really want to achieve in life. Beside their own competencies, students need to know what are the market\u2019s demands and what are the skill areas that company needs.<\/p>\n

According to the latest U.S Government report, this year more than 1.5 million students graduated from college but only 20 percent had job offers. The current unemployment in the U.S is 9 percent, but in Europe it is 13% so it is very difficult to obtain employment in this post-financial crisis time. However there are several jobs available in some areas but not enough workers. The \u201cHot areas\u201d are Healthcare, Pharmaceuticals, Renewable energy, Software engineering, Information system management, and Education. That is why all universities reported significant number of students returning to school this year to switch their skills into these areas. If you are not graduating in these \u201cHot\u201d areas, maybe you want to consider returning to school to take additional courses.<\/p>\n

Students should look at the job descriptions for positions that you want and determine whether there are certain requirements that you lack, for example certain technical or language skills than take additional trainings to fill the gap. You could mention in your resume that you are currently enroll in certain classes and list the expected completion time. Should a job interview come up before you have\u00a0 finished these courses, the company will be impressed by your determination and willingness to improve your skills and that will clearly look more favorable to them that you are the right one.<\/p>\n

You need to keep both your attitude positive and your energy up. Give yourself some time off from the job search by spend time with friends, family members, and get plenty of sleep. Your good health, both mental and physical, is vital to a successful job search and transition from college to career. Nothing worst than go to a job interview looking sick or in poor health.<\/p>\n

In the mean time, another good thing that you can do is to volunteering for a charity organization that has meaning for you. This will keep you busy and will lift your spirits and get you out of the house. It is also a good way to develop additional skills to put on your resume and could be a potential job opportunity. Few years ago, one student wrote in his resume: \u201cVolunteer to set up a network system and website for an orphanage and manage their information system for six months\u201d. This triggered an interest of a company and he was hired because he had experience as compare to his friends who also graduated but have not do anything.<\/p>\n
