These studies found that most women did not like to take science class but preferred to study education, business, literatures and arts. Personally, I think this is a mistake as science and technology are opening more opportunities for women today than ever before.<\/p>\n<p>I believe that in science and technology overall, there is no gender difference in promotion to better positions or salaries. If you look at several top high technology companies, many of them are managed by women (CEO Meg Whitman at eBay and CEO Carly Fiorina at HP and today both of them resigned to run for California governor and senator positions). In high technology company the number of woman in management position is 32% but still growing fast and could reach 50% in another few years. If you look at top universities, many top tenured professor positions are held by women and number of women enrolled at university in the U.S are higher than men (58% women vs. 42% men) but only less than 30% are studying science and technology. My question is why women do NOT studying science and technology?<\/p>\n<p>Why is this happening? Is it our culture? Our universities? Our social stereotypes? I do NOT think so. What I believe is women need a stronger sense that they can take charge of their career and be successful in science and technology areas. I believe the technology career has enormous flexibility, it has tremendous value for our society, and it is a highly desirable career aspiration for women, and that women should have every opportunity to succeed and advance in their aspirations. A diverse technical workforce&#8211;one that includes men and women is good for the technology industry, it also is good for business. And it&#8217;s good for the world.<\/p>\n<p>Let me give you some facts and data. The research group, Catalyst, published a report of their research of the large 500 companies in America. The report stated that companies with the highest percentages of women managers have on average a 35 percent higher profits than others than those with the lowest percentages of women in management. Thirty five percent is a significant financial performance when women are in management positions. It is no wonder today that global businesses are actively seeking more women to fill management positions. Another study by Wharton school of business found that women managers manage projects better than men as they are more careful with financial budget and communicate much better than men. In my forty years in software industry, I found that most women have more patient, more cautions in the business but flexible enough to address changes in software projects and that is why they did well with users and customers than men.<\/p>\n<p>Why women do not study science and technology? Some people told me that many parents prefer to have their daughters study something more traditional such as nursing, education, or accounting. I do not agree with that explanation as it is rooted from an obsolete belief that women should stay at home. I like to remind these people that we are not in the 18th century anymore but in the 21st century and in this information age everything is possible. Another people told me that many women do not like technology or computer but according to another survey by U.S consumer group, when it comes to technology, more women are making decisions in buying electronic gadgets such as TV, mobile phones, and computers for the family than men. Why? Because there\u2019s a high probability that women control the financial aspect of the family and make decision based on the budget not on style. (Men prefer style and the latest equipment but do not pay much attention to the budget, according to the survey).<\/p>\n<p>I think the main reason that women do not study science and technology because there is not enough information about these careers and role models for women. Especially in Asia, there are not enough women in technology area. Currently Asian has many women working as medical doctor, lawyers, business persons but not many software engineers or information technology managers. However, as time goes by I am sure that we will have many as the technology keep changing and opening more opportunities everyday.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, women face many choices in life that affect their careers. Do they continue to work while raise a family? Do they return to work after having children? Do they advance into higher positions or stay in their current positions to avoid family difficulties? However it is their choice and whatever decision that they made, I am sure that they will make the right decisions.<\/p>\n<p>As a professor, I always advise my students: \u201cYou are the one who responsible for your career. Your family do NOT send you to school to be housewives so you must use your education as a career enhancer then take the initiative to take advantage of life&#8217;s situations and have the courage to follow your heart. When you are in school and even after you start working, always take maximum advantage of the learning opportunities you have. It will help you throughout your career. Move forward in your career development. Don&#8217;t be shy about taking the initiative and take advantage of situations to advance your career.
