Some managers think global business means selling products all over the world. The fact is global business is not just selling products but also building products all over the world. If the cost of manufacturing is lower in other countries than there is no reason to build them in higher cost countries. This idea created the outsourcing trend in the past decades. Global companies build products where it give them the maximum benefit and also use the knowledge in the outsourced country to sell more products there as it opens new market for them.<\/p>\n<p>Managers who succeed in local business may not be successful in global business because they often miss the opportunity. Even when they foresee an opportunity, they are too cautious as they do not know how to compete in a highly competitive market as things often happen fast. The old business rule encourages conservative approach to avoid risk. The new business rule encourages taking risk to achieve maximum profit and growing quickly. This new concept encourages radically thinking rather than just focus on revenue and cost, it advocates exponential growth in a business environment of rapid change.<\/p>\n<p>When companies cannot expand with their existing operations, they must start thinking of new businesses. In a global and fast changing market, it is not enough to limit business based on what you know but you must learn quickly and grow. Five years ago, Apple and Google were just technology companies but today both expand into telecommunication and top companies such as Nokia, Sony, Ericsson, and Motorola suddenly found themselves cannot compete with the newcomers. When these companies stand still and do not grow, they wither and decline as competition is fierce. This is where old management concept fails as they are too cautious to compete in a fast changing world. This is how many business trainings are obsolete because they do not pay attention to technology as the main driver but still relying on capital and assets. This is why local businesses are often being replaced by aggressive global businesses.<\/p>\n<p>Some business trainings may not be suitable for the new global economy as students are taught about finance, accounting, and economy but NOT much on technology as driver in a global market. The new management concept is about seeking new markets, new opportunities, new ventures, and providing values to customers. In this time of rapid change, managers must have the latest market information to make decisions. They must have the fastest operation systems to adjust to market changes. They must use the best information technology to create advantages. They must\u00a0establish new positions that lure customers from others and capture market share. They must have both knowledge of business and skills of information technology. For example online stores draw customers who like convenience away from physical stores. Smart phone and tablets lure customers away from personal computer.<\/p>\n<p>With globalization, small startups can compete with well established business to get customers. It is NOT about capital and assets but it is about how fast they can move. To move fast, they must depend on information technology and creativity. Entrepreneur must find unique positions that have been overlooked by established competitors. Startups can prosper by occupying a position that big competitors do not have. In the past, companies depend on their products but today products are not enough as they also need customer\u2019s satisfaction. To succeed, they must focus more on services and this is where many businesses fail to recognize. Few years ago, when I was in China I saw luxury clothing stores and wondered how these people could afford such expensive clothes when they can buy similar items at lower prices at local stores. I was wrong; a friend told me that these expensive items were doing quite well because of their better services and better marketing and advertising. Customers are buying \u201cbrand names\u201d not just clothing. When fashion changes, people go after the latest fashion, the latest brands. That is why people stand in line to buy an Apple iPhone and willing to pay more than similar local phones from Huawei or HTC.<\/p>\n<p>Basically, new businesses open up because of technology change. New customer and new needs emerge as societies evolve; new distribution channels appear as more countries are participating. New technologies are developed with new machinery as more people are getting into these fields. When these changes happen, new startups, new types of manager will emerge and new education systems will happen. With all these change everybody has a chance to participate and prosper as the new management will replace the old.\u00a0A good local business is not enough. New managers need to know how to transform a local business into a global business as other global businesses are moving into the local areas. For example, few years ago fast food business such as McDonald, KFC, Pizza Hut, and Starbuck did not exist in China and India but within few short years, there are thousands of them everywhere in those countries. What happened to local small restaurants?
