A graduated student wrote to me: \u201cI have a degree in business administration but could not find any job. My parents have to sacrifice a lot to pay for my education and they are disappointed. I spent the entire last year looking for work but found none. I am desperate and do not know what to do. Please advice.\u201d<\/p>\n

Answer: Today college degree is NO LONGER a guarantee for job. To get good job, you must have SKILLS and that skills have to be something that hiring company needs. Since you already graduated, you must look at your skills to determine which companies may need them, even they may be outside of your field of study. Do NOT rely on your degree and narrow your choice to few businesses but use your skills to broaden your search for job. You need to rewrite your resume to focus on each specific position to which you are applying by emphasize your skills that you can do for the company.<\/p>\n

Since you have spent the whole year looking for work but could not find anything maybe you need to determine what are the needs in your local market and decide whether you want to change your career to meet those needs. My question is do you know what you want your next career to be? It is important for you to know that a career is NOT a job; it has to be something that you can do for a long time; and it has to be something that you will enjoy. For example, if you do not like to sit in front of a computer for several hours a day then you may not select software development work. If you do not like to work with numbers then you should not select accounting work.<\/p>\n

You will need to be more active in this research using the descriptions of what you want in a new career. Narrow it to a few areas that fit what you want then identify the skills need to get those jobs and compare to what you have and determine what skills that you need to learn. If the local market is too limited, you may explore global market as there are more opportunities there, but the competition is also fierce. If you decide to broaden your search into a global market then you will need to have communication skills. You may have to learn a foreign language to get job with global companies in your country or looking for job in other countries.<\/p>\n

If needed, you may have to go back to school and get a second degree that may help you to get the job that you want.
