As the global financial situation is still in the state of uncertainty, companies are looking for a better way to reduce the cost of information technology and Software as a Service (SaaS) is one of the solutions that many companies are seeking.<\/p>\n

The SaaS model is not new, but it is well positioned to thrive in this global economic crisis. It allows companies to quickly implement all the latest IT services on a rental basis without the additional costs or risks associated with traditional purchasing of hardware and software. It is better fit for companies with limited budget. It also allows people to work remotely instead of going to the office and still being able to access all information needed so they can still sharing, communicating with their customers, team members and business partners.<\/p>\n

The current advances in high speed internet, mobile communications and web services are making SaaS more affordable to all kinds of company not necessary the large ones. It also allows companies to reduce significant in-house IT costs as the services are now managed by outside vendors. \u00a0In the past two years, the number of companies shifting from in-house software development to outside vendors using SaaS model has increased almost 40% and most companies reported that they are very satisfied with this model, almost haft of them have plans to expand their services. According to several studies, the SaaS market could grow to several billion dollars in the next few years and as a result, it is attracting a large number of companies seeking to gain market share of this rapidly growing business.<\/p>\n

Currently this model is popular in the U.S and few countries in Europe but not in Asia or Africa due to the limited infrastructures and the lack of understanding of what SaaS benefits are. Another key factor of this model is having a team of skilled management who understand about services, and receive training in service management. Current training today is focusing mostly in software product management but not in service management, unless they understand the service model, it will be difficult to manage service and achieve customer satisfaction. With the global crisis impacted almost every country, this service model will open up more opportunities for small start-up companies who want to provide this kind of services and capture the market before other competitors move in. However, the SaaS model requires vendors to continue to invest in infrastructure and keep all software updates to ensure customers have the latest software versions, this has put a lot of pressure on small vendors as they have to continually invest in their services instead of counting on their profits since customers pay per usage instead of large sum of money as traditional purchasing of software products and they can switch vendors when their contracts expire.<\/p>\n

Today, competition is becoming fierce in the U.S as larger companies such as IBM, Microsoft, Google, Oracle are getting into the market. Recently, many SaaS companies cannot sustain their business due to lack of funding to finance their operations so in the next few months there will be some inevitable shakeups among smaller vendors, either go out of business or being acquired by larger vendors.<\/p>\n
