First, the success rate when applying for \u201cadvertised jobs\u201d is low because that kind of hiring is arbitrary, almost like a lottery. Sometime, \u201cadvertised jobs\u201d are reserved for people who already have connection with hiring managers so outside candidates rarely have a chance.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of being passive, my advise is to do something different and take control of your own destiny.\u00a0Why would you rely on a job search that involves intensive competition and an arbitrary selection method? You must start with a strategic job search by<b>knowing yourself<\/b>\u00a0and\u00a0<b>knowing the job market<\/b>\u00a0(The job market is the types of companies that need people with particular knowledge and skills). By knowing yourself and what is needed in the market will allow you to focus on which employers are hiring and which jobs will offer you a better chance. The best job should be the one that fit you well and allow you to enjoy working for a long time.<\/p>\n<p>To start, you must reassess your skills, your strengths and weaknesses,\u00a0<b>as seen by the employers<\/b>. Let\u2019s me give you an example, when you evaluate a computer or a mobile phone before purchasing, what do you ask? Would you ask \u201cWhat will this product offer me? How does it differ from other product? How does this brand differ from other brand? How much does it cost? The same questions also apply to your job search. How do you make yourself differ from other applicants? What are your knowledge and skills? What can you offer that others can not? Will your skills help a employer\u2019s business? Answering these questions requires an in depth look at your own capability. You need to list all the things that you do well and like to do. It is very important to put serious time and efforts into understand yourself and your ability. Do not assume that you have a degree than you will be guaranteed a job. In this highly competitive job market, you have to compete with many people like you. They all have degrees and they all want to have jobs. You do not know who they are and where they come from so you must have a strategy for job search.<\/p>\n<p>Following is several steps that you can do, even they seem simple, but they imply much more than you think:<\/p>\n<p>1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The first step is for you to think carefully about what will be the best jobs and best companies that you want to work for. Write down your ideal jobs on a piece of paper, list all the skills that they require. Be honest and realistic about it because it is something that you want to pursue. Do NOT confuse what you have learnt in school and what these companies need. They may NOT be the same as many schools do NOT have training programs based on industry\u2019s trends.<\/p>\n<p>2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The second step is to list your own qualification (Your knowledge and skills). Whatever you list, you must ensure that you do it honestly and objectively. Think carefully about your passions, what you enjoy most because these are your strengths and your potential. You may look at yourself from a wider perspective than just technical skills, think about your personality, the situations and challenges that you have overcome and things in life that you are good at. Every company needs people who have certain characteristics and potential that cannot be listed by &#8216;job-skills&#8217;. They need people with certain qualities like confident, dependability, creativity, passion, determination, compassion, integrity, visionary, ethics, and possess the knowledge of the whole industry, including the business aspect, technology aspect, with good communications skills etc.<\/p>\n<p>4)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The fourth steps is identify any gaps between your \u201cdream jobs\u201d and your own capability. If the gap is big then you must reconsider whether you are qualified for the dream jobs or not. Finding these companies and contact persons will require some effort but you must be persistent. Today the internet and the telephone make it easy to gather some detail about who you should contact. Of course, a family friends, a professors, or an classmates may give you some names that you can contact. You need to send resume to business managers who can make decisions, it doesn&#8217;t matter if you get referred to hiring people because you have done what you can. Remember that these managers know what openings they have and what they need, and they can make things happen. If they recognize the strengths in your resumes and the approach you have taken they may be impressed. You must be cautious here because the job title of the business manager will depend on the types of jobs that you are approaching, and this requires some thought and research. You do NOT send your resumes to the president of the company when you are applying for an entry level jobs. Of course, It is OK to send your resume to more than one person in large companies.<\/p>\n<p>Please remember to present yourself in your resume in terms of what you can do for the company. This is very important to describe yourself in a way that is immediately appealing to the reader, which means putting yourself in their positions and imagining what they particularly need. What are the priorities that they will need a new employee to do and what are their criteria regarding knowledge, skills, personality, values, etc., that new employees must possess? You must change your resume to fit each company because each may have different needs. You must approach at least 20 companies because your goal is to get at least\u00a0<b>two job interviews<\/b>. Having more than one interview is significant as it puts you in a strong position. You are having the choice now, and most employers will want you if they think you are in demand elsewhere. Be persistent and keep on looking and NEVER give up. Keep notes on every opportunities so you can improve your understanding of your own personal &#8216;job search\u201d. It Should NOT be one of hundred other resumes that people sending in everyday and hope that they can get jobs. Your resume must be special and it must get noticed. If you follow this process it is inevitable that you will get some positive responses. Many of my students have taken this approach, they told me that it save employers the task of advertising for jobs. If your approach coincide with a job opening then you will get an immediate respond that saves the company recruitment efforts, time, and advertising costs. Sometime, this approach can make the employer to create a job specially for you because they are impressed with what you can offer.
