The research concluded that the IT function of 2015 will be different to its current state. Many activities will be integrated with the business activities, be consolidated with other functions such as HR and Finance, or be outsourced completely.\u00a0The researchers have interviewed hundreds of\u00a0business leaders\u00a0and found that\u00a0these changes are already\u00a0happened. Here are some facts of the findings:<\/p>\n<p>Five years ago, less than 25% of business leaders rated their organization\u2019s IT function as effective and delivering the capabilities that they needed. Today the number has NOT changed. Most IT organizations are still having problems, many projects are late, have lower quality, and cost more than expected. Many IT managers do NOT receive adequate trainings, they do NOT understand customers\u2019 demand, know how to set priorities, manage project effectively, and capture business value for the company. Business leaders feel they should be getting more efficiency, more innovation, more value from their investment in technology.<\/p>\n<p>Among the coming changes are the consolidate of IT function into the business functions rather than allows it to be independent. Many IT managers who come from the technical side will be replaced by people who are trained in both technical and business. For the company to stay competitive, Information Technology must be part of a business strategy and a standalone supporting IT function is no longer the best option. To reduce the costs, some IT functions will be outsourced or relocated elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p>Because Information technology will be delivered as a service, many companies will utilize the cloud computing model to reduce IT costs. Any company could use the cloud computing model to obtain the same functionality, scale, and quality without investing a lot of money in computing infrastructure. The demand for information technology also is changing as future IT employees are no longer just technical people but having both technical and business knowledge. Social media will becoming vital for customer and internal communication, and data volumes continue to rise. As a result, the future of IT will shift from software development to software as a services that drive growth such as marketing, sales, and customer service. \u00a0To collect, integrate, and interpret data into vital information to help management making decisions, some skills such as database administration, data warehouse, business intelligence, collaboration, and service management will be in high demands.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, the IT function is NOT effective because technical people who manage IT do NOT understand the business well. The industry demand that future IT leaders must have both technical and business skills. They must possess skills in strategy development, services management, business process design, project management, and sourcing management. They must understand that IT function enables business outcomes so they must \u201cbuild things right,\u201d and manage resources that \u201cbuilds the right things.\u201d The need for efficiency and accountability for execution will change the IT function as it merges into a business services group alongside other functions.<\/p>\n<p>What do all these change impact current IT training? According to the research, university must also adjust their training programs to accommodate industry\u2019s needs. First, the fundamental shift from software as product to software as service demand different skill sets. There will be fewer demand on IT function\u2019s as in-house product delivery role with fewer product developments but increased business alignment as IT function must work more closely with business activities to be effective. Students must be trained in both technical and business skills, they must understand business strategy, customer enablement, and business innovation.
