That is why I believe higher education needs to focus on developing the TOTAL person, not just providing technical knowledge.<\/p>\n<p>University needs to understand that performance, integrity, and capability are dependent on students\u2019 attitude and maturity. A mature student understand himself and also know to look at things from other people\u2019s view. A more mature student will understand his capability and be responsible for his own actions. They also develop virtues such as justice, charity, and generosity that can benefit the society and the country. I believe higher education must help students to achieve their capabilities on a personal level as well as providing them with knowledge and skills because they are the foundation for high performance individuals that are relevant to higher responsibilities and teamwork.<\/p>\n<p>University needs to provide career guidance to students as soon as they enter the school and help them to select what they want to achieve in life based on their capabilities. Many first year students do NOT know how to set directions or select which careers that they could pursue. Sometime their parents are making decisions for them and sometime they make hasty decisions based on the influence of their friends. School could use a personal development questionnaire to help them set career directions, provide examples of\u00a0 alternative learning opportunities, and it should starts with the person, NOT the skills, NOT the field of study, and NOT the exam grades. It should be about students\u2019 attitude and emotional maturity.<\/p>\n<p>When students understand their capabilities, they will become more confidence on themselves and be responsive for their own career directions. Without confidence, they many simply &#8216;follow whatever path come their way\u201d or \u201cselect something by random\u201d, and acting in a \u201cconforming\u201d manner with the social trend because they feel insecure about their choices. For example, if computer career is hot then they will select computer field of study, regardless whether they are interest in computer or not. Many students let their parents make decisions for them and of course, many parents like their children to study medical, pharmacy, software, or business regardless of their children\u2019s capabilities. I have seen many students failed and quit schools after a year because they did not have the capabilities or the maturity to pursue the directions that have been set for them. Many admitted to me that they felt frustrated and their lives were nothing but failures. This is where I believe university must step in and helps students to build self-confidence and guide them when they begin the first year in school.<\/p>\n<p>I understand that building self-confidence requires a lot of efforts from the school staff but it is a good investment for the school and for the society. As educators, we do NOT want to see failures in our school. We do NOT want to see our students quit school because they can NOT handle the courses. We do NOT want to see our students select the wrong field of\u00a0 study if they do NOT know which one are suitable for them. We must spend time and effort to help them, and nurture them to get what they want to attain in our schools. School should NOT be the place for competition with winners and losers. Schools should NOT be the place for elimination with some make it and some do not. School must be a place to guide and nurture students\u2019 strengths of spirit so they can gain self-confidence and help them to make career decisions for themselves.<\/p>\n<p>Traditional education that focuses on competition and elimination should be changed. This kind of education is NO LONGER suit today\u2019s learning environment. Student should NOT fear of failure because it only encourages them to be apprehensive. If school is a place of competition and hostility, students will learn to fight, to compete and win at all costs and they can NOT work well in team. They should understand that in teamwork, there is NO winner or loser as they all share the same goals. Students should be encouraged to learn, to explore, to discover so they can gain self-confidence, patience and appreciation of their education. If they are recognized for their efforts, they will learn to set their goals and directions. If they are encouraged to share information and to discuss learning objectives then they learn about generosity and honesty where everyone have something to contribute to the team. If they are treated with fairness, they understand justice, kindness and learn how to respect each other. If they are treated with friendliness, they learn about truthfulness and have faith in themselves. As they gain more confidences they will learn how to trust and help other and that is the beginning of teamwork and leadership. Good leadership requires inclusive and maturity.
