I understand that companies always interview a lot of students to select the bests so my question is how I could increase my chance to get the job. What should I do and what do companies really want from college graduates?<\/p>\n<p>Answer: There are several things companies are looking for in newly graduates. Having good grades is one but not the only thing. You must demonstrate other aspects such as maturity, confidence, soft-skills, and broader knowledge about the industry and the global environment too. Having good grades only means that you study hard and do well in school but most companies are looking for people who can do well in working places such as work in team; have passion on what they are doing, and can solve problems.<\/p>\n<p>The common questions that companies often ask are: How do you relate what you have studied to the working places? Do you have knowledge and skills beyond academic? Do you know something about the company\u2019s business or the industry? Do you pay attention to the global market? Do you read something interesting lately? These are things that determine your personality, your characters, your overall knowledge, and your passions.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, a student told me that during the interview, he was asked to describe three books that he read in the past six months. When he started to describe computer textbooks, the interviewer said: \u201cDo you read anything else beside computer books? When he answered that he only read books that were required by the school, the interviewer seemed annoyed: \u201cDo you know something about the market or the economy? Do you read any book at all? When the answer was \u201cNot much\u201d he was dismissed without any further question.<\/p>\n<p>A hiring manager told me that he felt uncomfortable that even today with the Internet and Social networks, many students were not paying attention to world events or what had happened in their own society. He said: &#8220;Year after year, one of the biggest difficulties I see in applicants is their lack of knowledge about the world around them. They seem to live in a \u201cshelter world\u201d of academia but ignorance of what happens around them. Many people coming out of college have had great technical knowledge and skills but unable to relate what they have learned to the world that they are living in. They cannot explain globalization; climate changes; economic issues, and how these things affect their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Another manager observes. &#8220;I am looking for a \u201cHuman being\u201d not some \u201cRobots\u201d who only know how to code or design computer system. This generation can do well in the virtual world but not being to do well in real world. They are awkward in face-to-face situations and seem confused and ignorance in the real world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When I mentioned that to students, some defended their positions: \u201cOur parents told us to focus on studying and not worry about anything else. If we do not study hard, we may not get good grades and have good jobs.\u201d I explained to them that their parents may be right in the past when things were stable and a college education or degree was the key factor in finding jobs. Today we are living in a fast changing globalized world where technical knowledge is not enough and they must be aware of what is going on in the world and be prepared to compete with others who also want the same job.<\/p>\n<p>One of the key mistakes that students made is not well prepared for the interviews. Many do not research about the company that they are interviewed with or know something about their business. Just looking at the company web site is not enough, they must do more.<\/p>\n<p>A hiring manager told me: &#8220;When I ask candidates what they know about us, most do not know much as they utter a few word such as \u201cit is a good company\u201d. It means they do not care about us, they only want a job.\u201d He added: &#8220;When a candidate researches the company and mentions something else more than what we put in our website than it is exciting. It is interesting to hear someone tell us something that we may not even know. That means the candidate is serious to work with us as an indication that he is taking time to research more and of course he is really special and that is someone we want to hire.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Another common mistake that students often made is they like to talk about themselves rather about what they can do for the company. When an interviewer asks why you want to work for the company, most students often answer: \u201cI have good technical skills, then list a number of classes that they receive good grades.\u201d A hiring manager told me: \u201cThey like to talk about their achievements in school instead of what they can do for my company. If I care about their grades, I can look at their school transcripts. What I want is someone who can relate their skills to the needs of my company. I want them to tell me what they can do for my company or how do they connect to the company. I do not want someone to tell me about their school grades.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Another hiring manager added: \u201cWe do not hire \u201cScholars\u201d with perfect grades. Grade is relative in the working place. We want to hire people who are willing to work hard and put in the extra effort in doing the work. We rather hire an average student with strong motivation and passion about working than the best student who is confused about doing work outside the school. The notion that only top graded students get good jobs is wrong. School may motivate students by encourage them to achieve top grade but we want students who are mature, confidence and willing to work hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It is important to students to know that it often takes longer for company to process applications. The average wait between interview and job offer is 24 to 30 days.
