Other Advice for first year students<\/p>\n

I received an email where the sender wrote: \u201cI really like your advices in the SEGVN website but beside study technical things what else would you suggest to a first year college student?\u201d<\/p>\n

My suggestions: \u201cCollege life is NOT about just study technical things but also about knowing yourself and maturing into a responsible adult. My simple suggestion to you is to take care of yourself. Make sure that you get enough sleep and rest. You may want to start each morning with some light exercises to maintain your health. Of course, it would be better if you can participate in some sports such as soccer, ping pong, badminton, jogging, or walking etc. Your health and your mind are related, you cannot study well if you are sick so staying healthy is important to all college students.<\/p>\n

As a first year student, you need to keep your mind calm and avoid unnecessary activities that may distract you from your study. Study is a \u201clearned habit\u201d and you need a self-discipline to develop this habit throughout the time in school and eventually all your life. If you have time, please read as many books as possible, you can select any types of book that interest you to broaden your knowledge. I know that today many young people do not like to read books but prefer TV, music, or computer games. I believe that reading books gives you better exercise for your brain, keeps you relax and prepares you for your further study. Computer games can be addictive and some games are promoting violence, sexual, or have bad influence so you must be careful as they could be vexation to your spirit.<\/p>\n

In college, you have more opportunities to meet people, making new friends and share interests. You should be caution in selecting friends for there are good and bad influences. Remember that education is a major investment in term of financial and effort so please be careful in managing your time and your spending. You should set goal for your study and keep interested in the field of study. Do not compare yourself with others for there will always be someone better than you but be humble and continue to maintain your progress, it is the key to develop your character.\u00a0 You also need to practice patience and avoid judging people. Everybody has their own perspectives and something to say so you must treat others with respect, and listen to them. Kindness goes a long ways, you need to turn your compassion into actions by helping others. You need to develop your \u201cSoft-skills\u201d such as communication, presentation, teamwork, negotiation, discussion but remember also to practice listening as it is one of the best skill you will have in your life.<\/p>\n

As you are maturing, you will make mistakes but as long as you learn NOT to make the same mistake again, you are doing fine. Do not be bitter or disappoint for things may not happen as you wish but maintain your course and keep interested in your own career. Remember that things will come and go but your goals should remain the same as you are aiming toward that, just like a boat sailing in the ocean, there will be big waves but you must overcome them all to reach your final destination.<\/p>\n

Even you are in college, whether you are living in the dormitory or with your family. You need to think about your family, never forget that your parents have worked very hard to raise you and gave you this wonderful opportunity. Do not disappoint them as they love you more than you can imagine. Some students left home for college, enjoy their independent then forget about the sacrifice of their family. Before you can succeed with your career you should first be a good son and daughter. It is the most important step as you are entering an adult life, if you are not a filial son or daughter, you will not be a responsible adult and if you are not a responsible adult, you will NOT go anywhere.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
