The job dilemma<\/p>\n

Last week, a student asked me: “In this economic downturn, you cannot get a job without experience, but you cannot get experience without a job. So what can we do?\u201d. Of course, many graduates are facing the same dilemma today. In difficult time, even people with experiences are also struggle to find jobs. So here is a story of a former student who came back and told my class last year.<\/p>\n

David graduated in 2008 when the financial crisis happened. Like many other college graduates, he could not find a job so he approached a small company where the owner was trying to market a new software product but had no money to hire people to implement it. David told the owner: \u201c I will work for you to build your new product without salary, but I insist on you to give me a title appropriate to the job that I will be doing: ‘Project Manager Assistant\u2019. If I complete the product, you will give me a share of the profit that you think would be reasonable since I will do most of the works. After that, I will need a good reference to look for another job.”<\/p>\n

He spent the next eight months to work for the owner. Together they completed the product but could not sell it. However, the owner said David\u2019s job was to work on the product only not selling it, so as long as he did well, he would get what he asked for in the form of references to other companies. Those references along with a resume that included the project title, eventually led to a job with another software company. David told the class: \u201cI could continue to look for jobs after graduated but at the peak of the financial crisis, all companies stopped hiring so why bother to do something with no hope of getting hired. I need the experiences so I approached Mr. Thomas to help him without any payment because he could not afford to pay me. Basically, I gained a lot of experiences and with that I got a very good job offered. If Mr. Thomas was able to sell his product in the future, I will have a small share of his profit, it is like putting money in a saving account and wait for it to mature\u201d.<\/p>\n

I asked David to give some advices to students so he told them: \u201cYou must know yourself, your skills and the value you could provide. I wanted software development experience so I volunteered to work for Mr. Thomas to get what I need. Of course, I know what I will receive in exchange. For me, it was a title that I could add to my resume and a good reference indicated that I have the experiences. This kind of compensation is about value received for value given and NOT about money. Of course, if I want money then I will NOT get it. What I am looking for is the opportunity to \u201cLIFT\u201d myself out of the dilemma of NOT having experience\u201d.<\/p>\n

What David did was a brilliant idea to get out of the dilemma that many of you are facing today. First, you should NOT wait for the opportunity to come to you but you must CREATE the opportunity yourself. You may want to volunteer working for a company or a charity organization to gain enough experiences so you could find a better paying jobs. The idea is to keep yourself busy and do something positive to gain access to the job market. If you already graduated, do NOT give up or stay home because in few months, you will forget what you have learned in school then feel frustrated. Do NOT blame yourself or feel bitter about anything, the crisis happened everywhere and there are many people who could not find jobs like you. You need to know that \u201cLooking for work is a fulltime job, and you must continue to search everyday just like you are going to work\u201d . You could solve the dilemma of \u201cCannot get a job without experience and cannot get experience without a job\u201d by create your own solution and bravely execute it.<\/p>\n

Some of you may think: \u201cI already spent many years in school, I already have a degree and I am NOT do anything without compensation\u201d. If you are too proud about your degree or your achievement then you should get over it. Do not let your ego get in the way. There are so many \u201cproud people\u201d with \u201cno jobs\u201d in the world, many are still living with their parents and spent time \u201cfeeling bitter\u201d about themselves. In this highly competitive market, that kind of pride has no value. If you choose to create your own opportunity, you will gain industry experience that will solve the dilemma of \u201cNot having experiences\u201d and will ultimately lead to a good jobs.
