What areas will be hot?<\/p>\n

Last week, a first year student in China asked me: \u201cInformation technology is a large field with many specific domain areas. What domain area should I focusing on so when I graduate four year from now, I would be able to have a good job? If I want to work in the U.S or Europe what else do I need?\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I told him: \u201cIt is difficult to predict the future as technology is changing fast but based on what is happening today, I believe that mobile technology and cloud computing will be \u201chot\u201d in the next few years. Personally, I think that mobile application development would be a good domain area to focusing on. The evident is already clear, few years ago, desktop and laptop computing were the dominant area but today smart phone is a better choice as it is more convenience. Even with millions of applications available on I-Phone and Android but they are still small applications with single purpose. I believe in the near future, many applications will be integrated and there will be more larger and sophisticated software for mobile platforms. I think few years from now mobile application domain area will dominate the market, replacing desktop and laptop. I already saw several prototype models in Japan and S. Korea that I was very impressed so I am convinced that people will not need to carry a laptop and a mobile phone but only need one as it will have both functions. I do recommend students to look closely into this domain area.<\/p>\n

Another area also worth to look into is cloud computing although its future is still being debated among large software companies. There are issues with cloud computing that must be solved for it to be adopted by the industry. Social media applications or social web applications is another emerging area but it is not clear about its future on how it will be adopted and how many people this industry will hire. There are many \u201cHypes\u201d about social media applications based on the success of Twitter and Facebook but I am not sure about the future job market of this domain area. It could be big but it could \u201cfizzed\u201d such as the Dot.com industry few years ago.<\/p>\n

Even with all the changes, business applications such as accounting, finance, banking, payroll, customer relationship management (CRM), Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) will still be the dominant domain areas that hire a lot of people. These are the basic business needs that will not go away so you should not ignore them. There are also opportunities in industry specific domain areas such as manufacturing, aerospace, telecommunication etc. These industries also employ a lot of information technology people every year.<\/p>\n

As student in information technology area you have made a good choice and your future is bright with a lot of opportunities. As first year students, you will need to develop strong programming language skills in Java, C, C++ or C# . Programming language is the foundation that allow you to advance in the information technology domain areas. You also need to take some advanced concepts such as requirements engineering, information systems management, software project management, database management to understand how to apply technology in specific domain areas. By the beginning of the fourth year in college, you should focus on a particular domain knowledge area, be it mobile platforms, cloud computing, business applications, specific industry applications etc. then you can get ahead in this world. I think going forward in the next four to six years, students who have these domain technical knowledge with additional business knowledge can be highly sought after by large global company.<\/p>\n

If you are interested in working in the U.S or Europe, you need to have a strong foreign language skills and I do recommend English as it is used everywhere. Having a good command of English in both speaking and writing will opening more opportunities for you. With globalization and the critical shortage of software people everywhere, having English language and both technical and business skills will allow you to work in any country, reach any career level that you desire.<\/p>\n
