The urgent need<\/p>\n

Last week, I wrote about some \u201chot areas\u201d in the technology market and I believed mobile platform will be one of them in the next few years. I did not even know how that it is already \u201cvery hot\u201d. Yesterday an old friend who is an executive of a large software company called me and asked whether I have any software engineer student who qualified to develop applications for mobile devices. He seemed very anxious: \u201cI need to hire as many mobile device applications software engineers as possible. There is an urgent need in this area. Do you have any students soon to graduate that I can talk to\u201d.<\/p>\n

I asked: \u201cWhen do you need them and why of a sudden that you have such a need?\u201d<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cThis field is hot and I need many of them in the next 12 months as the supply of quality mobile-software engineers is limited. In the next few years, there will be a huge demand for this skill. Today software companies need mobile application developers because the market for mobile software has increased from $4 billion last year to over $10 billion this year and possible to $ 40 billion in the next few years. The demand for programmers who can write for mobile platforms, such as iPhone, Android, and BlackBerry has changed everything, Microsoft is coming up with another Window 7 phone next month so the market will be very hot. Since the introduction of iPhone and iPad, many companies are moving to mobile as a key component of their business strategy but there are not many people who have experience with mobile software, and there is a high demand for people who know how to make that work.”<\/p>\n

I told him: \u201cIt will need time for schools to upgrade their training programs and add mobile software development courses. However, do you consider hiring students with C#, C++ and Java programming experiences and some advance concepts in software engineering?”<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cWe would consider them if they also have basic hardware courses. It would be best if they understand iPhone architecture. They must be able to work fast because the urgent need. I am willing to pay about 10% to 20% more for students that have experience with Apple’s mobile platform such as iPhone applications. Especially if they can do some software integration. However, an experience with Android is also a good start. Today the entry salary range for mobile software engineer is between $85,000 to $110,000 but I would pay $125,000 for your students which is higher than normal because the reputation of your school and the quality of your students\u201d.<\/p>\n

I told him: \u201cThat is very nice but as far as I know there are few schools that teach about mobile platform such as iPhone or Android. Even with experienced people who already working in the industry, the number is still small because mobile application development is new although the growth rate is huge. Where can you find all the talents that your company need?\u201d<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cMobile platform is one of the top priorities in technology today. It will be very big as more businesses will incorporate mobile technology into their business. The competition has intensified because there are demands for this skill in other countries too. Today India and China are very active as they know that if they can move into this new area quickly, they could have significant advantage to dominate it. However, we already start to recruit talents wherever we can find them regardless of the country. I have sent managers to several countries in Europe and Asia to recruit as we will not stand still in this market. One of my manager will be at your school next week to discuss employment opportunity with your students. As long as your students are willing to learn and adjust to new types of mobile platforms, we will consider them as we need more good software engineers.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
