It seems that many do NOT want to learn anything. We grew up in difficult time when going to college is a privilege. Today students do not know how lucky they are to have such a good opportunity\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Because he is a professor so I told him: \u201cAs a Professor, you need to know why students do NOT want to learn? If you know the reasons then you can improve their learning. From my own experience, there are several reasons:<\/p>\n<p>If students do NOT think they CAN learn, they will resist any efforts that make them learn. Maybe they did NOT do well in classes so they think that they are NOT SMART enough for college. This is a psychological factor based on past experiences that lead to a \u201cnegative self-image\u201d. With these students, encouragement is very important. They may need additional helps and some small successes to \u201cBoost\u201d their self-images. For students without confidence who are afraid of learning, professor can help by create few learning situations in which they can achieve some successes early on in the course. Maybe a few \u201crelative easy\u201d exercises to get them start, once they have momentum than you can assume the normal direction.<\/p>\n<p>If \u00a0students do NOT see that the materials in class is benefiting them, they will NOT interest in learning. In this case, the professor may need to explain the reason why students need to know the materials. The best way is to explain the benefits at the beginning of each lecture. For example: By understand this lecture, you can do XYZ or by having this knowledge, you will be able to work as (a profession) etc. Professor could give students some case studies or real life examples for learning the materials and explains clearly why something is important, why it is relevant, and why students need to know.<\/p>\n<p>If students get frustrated in class, it is possible that they do NOT understand the content. Maybe they are overwhelmed by too much materials, maybe the object is unfamiliar or too abstract, maybe the fast paced delivery of material make them uncomfortable. In this case, the professor may want to slow down the pace, takes some time to review the materials, explains the fundamental concepts to rebuild the students\u2019 confidence before continues to the next subject. Sometime, students need a \u201cBreak\u201d to reduce the \u201cstress\u201d. As professor, we feel obligate to finish the entire course materials according to a schedule that the school dictate. However, I believe that we can make some modifications by focus on few important concepts instead of cover everything.<\/p>\n<p>If students seems uncomfortable in learning, maybe they are afraid of failure. Students like to learn from what they are familiar with rather go to something new. They prefer to hold on to certain views because they are comfortable with and resist going to new ways of learning. For example, they do NOT like teamwork but prefer individual work. They do NOT like \u201cActive learning\u201d where they have to do a lot of readings but prefer \u201cPassive learning\u201d by waiting for the professor to lecture and tell them what to do. Once a student in my class said: \u201cI hate class discussion!\u201d I asked \u201cWhy?\u201d He explained: \u201cI can\u2019t take notes in a discussion. What can I write down?\u201d He is a prolific note-taking type who would write everything down. His resistance is the new learning style is at odds with his learning style and how he learn. In this situation, a professor will need to explain the benefits of the new teaching approach and slowly transition from one style to another so students have time to adjust.<\/p>\n<p>Sometime, students do NOT want to learn because they do NOT like the professor. This is a sensitive subject and not a particularly pleasant thing to discuss. Whatever the reason is, regardless of whether it is right or wrong, sometimes students just do not like a particular professor and it is the conflict that cause the learning resistance.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, NO ONE can solve all problems. However, professors can deal more constructively with resistance to learning if they accept the fact that students cannot be forced to learn anything.
