What the U.S needs …<\/p>\n

According to U.S Government\u2019s report, for the second year in a row, software engineer is the number one job in America. Why is it so? According to the report, for the past ten years the U.S had a whole generations of young people went into business, finance, banking, and arts, not many studied engineering or science. The list of the ten critical jobs that must be filled but could not included: Software Engineer, Computer Scientist, Information System Manager, Aerospace Engineer, Medical Doctor, Nurse, Healthcare Professionals, Pharmacist, Machinist (Operate machine in factory) and High School Teacher.<\/p>\n

It is hard to imagine that there are so many opening positions when the unemployment rate is about 9% . However, the government survey found that many companies are having a very difficult time hiring skilled workers in these specific areas as they are in short supply due to high number of retired workers and low enrollment of students in these areas. The shortage is NOT new, since 2006, 44% of U.S. employers reported having a hard time filling these jobs but the warning was ignored until this year. The government have issued a call to universities to broaden the training in these critical areas and open more enrollments of students as they anticipates a severe critical shortage in the near future.<\/p>\n

One solution being proposed by the Competitive Engineering Institute (CEI) in Washington DC is to eliminate the limitation of the H1B visas program to allow unlimited number of skilled professionals to enter and work in the U.S. The CEI members wrote in an open letter to U.S government: \u201cThe growth of the information technology and science sectors of the economy has forced many American firms to scour the world for talent. To bring workers they need into the United States it is best to have open immigration. Highly skilled foreign workers are well educated, they receive high salaries and do pay taxes. Moreover, there is no competition between foreign workers and similarly skilled Americans due to the shortage. Foreign workers complement American workers and expand more benefits to the American economy, the restrictions on H-1B visas for skilled foreign worker should be removed. Contrary to claims by some restricted immigration advocates, many highly skilled foreign workers are opening more profitable businesses in the U.S and employ thousands of Americans. Aerospace is one of the critical factor of the U.S economy. However, most aerospace companies are looking to replace more than half of their engineers over the next eight years, because \u201cbaby boomers\u201d workers (Born between 1945 to 1965) are retiring, The number of aerospace workers in the U.S is estimated to be approximately 800,000 engineers, if half are retiring that means a lot of opening jobs. The government report found that even if\u00a0 every single seat in the U.S engineering schools is filled, that is only 60,000 engineers can be trained annually. That will NOT come close to making up the shortage. Aerospace engineer is a field that requires many years of experience before a person can take on major responsibility so it will be many years to solve this shortage.<\/p>\n

Among all of these high demand areas, I believe information technology is the best choice. First, it does NOT require a lot of time as compare with Medical, Pharmacy, Aerospace engineer or even Nursing. Beginning software workers only need an undergraduate degrees. Salaries usually started at $ 60,000 to 80,000 based on specialty. The next choice on the list is Nursing. It requires about four to six years in school (Depend on specialty). Based on the report, the demand for healthcare workers and nurse are higher than ever because the aging American population needs more and more health care. Current advances in medicine are enabling patients to survive and need treatment longer. However, to work in the U.S, foreign nurses must pass certain exams to work here where software workers do not.<\/p>\n

Regarding high school teacher, the demand is quite high because there is a lack of educators able to train the next generation teacher. The simple reason, in the past several years most students selected other fields rather than teaching because teacher salary is relative lower than other.
