Last week, I had a discussion with students about skills that the software industry needs. When I told them that there were many jobs for building mobile applications and working with Commercial Off The Shelf (COTS) applications such as SAP and PeopleSoft, a student immediately voiced the concern that those things are not taught in school.<\/p>\n

I explained: \u201cMany students do NOT know the different between what are taught in school and what are listed on the job market. What they learned in school is \u201cknowledge\u201d, when these knowledges are applied into something specific, they are considered \u201cskills\u201d. The job market usually does NOT list knowledge but requires certain skills. Most schools do not teach specific COTS applications skills such as SAP or PeopleSoft but do teach the knowledge of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Customer Relations Management (CRM) or Supply Chain Management (SCM). For example, in the \u2018Introduction to Information Systems Management\u2019, CMU students learn about these knowledge and issues associated with their implementation. The same thing can be explained that students learn programming languages such as C++, C# or Java and use these knowledge to develop mobile applications. As students, you need to know how to apply what you have learned to accomplish something in the industry and continue to learn new things when working. What you learn in school is what can be taught but what you learn when working is what will help you for the rest of your life. Today, technology changes quickly, if you do not keep up, you will be left behind\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cLast year, IBM conducted a study of university students and found that 80 percent of students believed that they will encounter new technologies when they work in industry. More than 74 percent of them were willing to go back to schools for retraining. The study also found that 68 percent of students were taken additional trainings, outside of their fields of study, to make sure that they possess certain skills before graduate so they can have better chance of getting jobs. The study found that students in business, finance, and accounting were taking many \u2018Information Technology\u2019 classes because they know without this knowledge, they will NOT go far in their careers. The study concluded that today students understand that they need technology skills for getting jobs across many fields.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cToday the current global job market is experiencing significant shortage of software engineer, computer scientists, and information systems manager. The shortage is NOT unique in the U.S or Europe but also in India and China as the demand is soaring for technology skilled workers. Currently, there is a debate in the U.S Congress on whether to allow more skilled people to enter and work in the U.S to stop the outsourcing trends that have been happening in the past ten years. Many Congressmen argued that open immigration will help increase taxes revenues as foreign workers also have to pay taxes and help the U.S economy. This is better than outsourcing that takes works to other countries, without benefit the U.S. However, the current shortage is so severe that most companies will have to do both: Bring in skilled workers (Open Immigration) and send works to other countries (Outsource works)\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cGlobalization is a new phenomenon of the 21st<\/sup> century. It opens more opportunities to developing countries, if they know how to seize them. The key factor is having a strong \u201cknowledge workforce\u201d because with the advancement of technology, machinery, and advanced sciences, \u201cLabor workforce\u201d will mostly be replaced by machines control by information technology (IT). That is why these IT jobs will explode as the need keeps increasing. With globalization, every company must operate efficiently and effectively as the competition is significant. To survive, companies must improve by applying more automation, adding more machineries, more robots, more equipments and these require more advanced information technology. In other word, companies will need more software architects, software designers, networking specialists, information system managers, software requirement specialists, database specialists, software developers, testers, and quality assurance. Today, companies could not get enough of these skilled people in their own countries, so, they have to find workers in other countries such as Eastern European, China, India, and South East Asia. The fact is in the past ten year, each year the U.S allows approximately 60.000 IT workers from India to come and work via the H1B visa program, is evident of the critical shortage. However, number of IT workers from other countries are not well documented but it is assumed that it is also close to hundred thousand. In Europe, the borders are more open so the number of foreign IT workers working is estimated at more than a million. Even with foreign workers adding to the current workforce, the job market for IT is still in shortage as demand keep growing faster than supply\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven with the economic recession, the need for IT workers is still in high demand. Currently, companies are looking for people with a broad information technology knowledge that can be applied across many areas. It is no longer that software workers will work in software industry but they could work in any areas, from Finance, Insurance, Banking to Manufacturing, Retails and even in Entertainment business. Such demands have driven many universities to offer \u201cinterdisciplinary\u201d courses among engineering, computer science and business schools. Regardless of whether students are majoring in Business, Finance, or Commerce, studying additional information technology courses is the right thing to do.
