Setting Goals<\/p>\n

Do you know how a captain navigates his ship in the ocean? First, he must know where he wants to go (His destination) and where he starts (His current position). He also needs maps and compass to help him sets direction (His plan). Every few hours, he must check the position of the ship and compare it with the plan to make sure that he is still on course and if needed, take correction. Only by doing it, he will reach his destination. You may think that it is simple but actually it is not so. What happen if he does NOT know his destination? Is it possible to sail in the ocean but do NOT know where you are going? In that case, any place could be a destination, isn\u2019t it? What happen if a captain does NOT know his current position? If he does NOT know where he is then he is lost, isn\u2019t he? Please think about this. People do NOT get lost because they do not know where to go but because they do NOT know where they are. In every journey, you have to know where you are, where you want to go so you can draw a map to help you to get there. You must check your progress and compare it with the plan to make sure that you are still following your map and if you deviate from it, you must take correction.<\/p>\n

There is NO difference between sailing in an ocean and go to college because college is also a journey. As students, you are the captain of your own ship (Your career). You need to know your destination (Your career goals). You need to know where you start (Your study field). You also need map and compass (Your career plans) and check your progress (How well you are doing in class) to make sure that you will acquire necessary knowledge and skills that will lead you from the first year in college to graduation, and beyond school to a career of your choice.<\/p>\n

Many college students do NOT know what they want (in a career). Of course, it is easy to assume that everybody want to have good job, good salary, and good life, However, sometime it is necessary to remind them that college is the time where students have to MAKE that decisions. They have to decide what they want in life so they can set their own career goals and plans to achieve them. The earlier they start thinking about their career, the easier it is to make the appropriate decisions and plans to achieve it.<\/p>\n

When students enter college, many have some ideas on what to do and what to study. However, many are based on \u201cidealistic notions\u201d without substantial information. For example, a student told me that he wanted to be a Medical Doctor but did NOT know that it requires seven years in Medical school, several more years in residency and internship. Another told me that he wanted to be an entrepreneur like Bill Gates but did not like to write code and he also hated mathematics. To make it a reality, it is important for students to set \u201creasonable goals\u201d based on something practical. By doing that, it is likely that they can achieve what they want, rather than just chasing after an \u201cimpossible dream\u201d. Just like a captain travel in the ocean, I recommend that first year students to create career goals (Destination) with several logical steps toward their goals (Career plan), take each step at a time, check on their progress, and add more details when necessary.<\/p>\n

The first step is to set career goals. This is an important step but many have tendency set them too high and too unrealistic. Perhaps they have been told to aim as high as possible by their family. Maybe their parents want their children to do something significant. Sometime high school teachers also encouraged students to set big goals. Of course, many students also want to be heroes. However, students must be very careful because this is the time where THEY make their OWN decisions about THEIR own careers and THEIR own life. This could be the first big decision that they have to make for themselves. Although parents may suggest something but it is still a decision that they have to decide on what they want and who they will be. They have to figuring out which career they like and which ones they do not. Before setting goals, they must analyze THEIR interests, THEIR skills, THEIR abilities, and THEIR values. These are things that will influence their thinking and behavior in college and possible in the future. THEY must seriously think about what they enjoy most and what they are good at. If they do NOT like their study field, they will NOT go far in their career, and they will be frustrated. That is why, it is important that students must chose their study field based on their preference as well as their ability, and they must chose it wisely.<\/p>\n

The next step is to investigate on their chosen careers. They must think about their decisions and learn more about them. The best way is to find out how other people in that field developed their careers. If possible, they must go and ask them. If\u00a0 a student want to be a Medical Doctor, he should go and asks several doctors. If students want to be software developers, they should go to a software company and interview several people who work there. Students must find answers to questions like: \u201cWhat kind of training, education and skills are required to work in this job?\u201d, \u201cWhat are the real-life working conditions, the skills and the work schedule in this job? Is it a kind of routine work that you go to work at 8:00 in the morning and return home at 4:00 in the afternoon? Is it a challenging work where there is NO time schedule but depends on the job requirements? For example, Medical Doctor and Nurse do NOT work routinely, they response to many emergencies. \u201cWhat are the salary, benefits, advancement opportunities etc.?\u201d, \u201cAre there additional rewards, material or non-material things on this field?\u201d.<\/p>\n

Based on these information, students can make firm decisions about their career goals and eventually their life. They can define career plans that they can follow and make decisions based on their goals. At this time, students do NOT need a lot of details as they will add more as they are making progress. It is critical that students be honest with themselves, do NOT let anyone change their plans or their careers. My advice: \u201cYou are planning for your life and your future. You must take it seriously do not let anything distract you from your goals. If you do NOT take it seriously or putting off for later, you will lose precious time and waste your efforts\u201d.<\/p>\n

After having a career plan, the next step is to follow it. Just like a captain must check the position of the ship against the map, students must review their progresses against their plans. They need to know how well they are doing according to their plan? After took a few courses according to the school\u2019s schedule and they will determine which class that they like and which one they do not. They must review these results with their plans to see how much progress that they have made toward their goals. Based on the progress, they will need to make some adjustments. Based on my experience with students, the main issue is NOT about the COURSE but mostly about the GRADE that they received. If they have good grades, they believe that they do well and vice versa. However, grade is determined mostly by how much time students spent on studying.<\/p>\n

The fact is college students NEVER have enough time for everything so they must learn to use their time wisely. They must coordinate their daily, weekly, and monthly activities according to certain obligations, studies, social activities and anything that is important. They must set priority by understand the difference between IMPORTANT and URGENT. Important tasks are thing that must be done. Urgent tasks are things that must be done NOW. Students must understand that there are things that can be done later, maybe tomorrow, maybe over the weekend, or maybe next week. They must know how to manage their time based on their priority. They have to accept the fact that they can NOT do everything as they also need time to sleep, to rest and to allow their brains to relax. They must learn to limit their activities to a few by select only things they are enjoying but also consistent with their career goals. This is the DISCIPLINE that students need to develop because mastering it is a SKILL that will be helpful throughout their life. Basically, students must develop good habit of study hard, get plenty of sleep, exercise regularly, and set time for relaxation. If they can take good care of their health, it will help them to study too because if they are sick, they will NOT study well. Remember that stress can cause a lot of damage to both body and mind.<\/p>\n

Knowing where you are going, knowing where you are at, knowing how much progress that you have made toward your goals then you will know a lot about yourself.
