To work or NOT to work<\/p>\n

Last week I received an email: \u201cIt seems that you are encouraging students to work while attending college but my parents told me that I should focus on my study since they can take care of me. Working will distract my study and I should NOT do two things at the same time then not succeed in any. What do you think?\u201d<\/p>\n

My answer: There are several opinions regarding whether students should work while attending college or not. Let us start with some data: A majority (85%) of American students work while attending college. In Europe, 67% of student work during the school year. However, in Asia, the number is only 30% or less. The reason: Asian parents prefer that their children stay focus on their study and NOT be bothered by anything else. If you look further, you will see that a majority of Asian students are living with their parents and depending on their parents for almost everything. However, the U.S and European\u2019s college students are very independent, they do NOT live at home and most only get limited supports from their parents.<\/p>\n

In my opinion, the decision about whether or not to work while in college is an individual choice or a family situation. Some students work because their parents can NOT afford to pay for their school or they want to earn extra money to support their family. Others work to develop their skills in their career field so that once they graduate, it will be easier to find employment. Of course, some choose NOT to work because they believe that having high grades will be the key to a better job later on. Basically, there is no right or wrong answer but only a matter of personal preference and circumstances.<\/p>\n

There are several reasons for students to work or NOT to work and they may not have anything to do with earning a living. Some students find that college work is challenging, they may have difficulty keeping good grades while working. Some prefer to participating in the college life such as teamworks, social activities, school events, becoming members of school organizations, as these activities are more important to their personal development than working. Some students want to experience working life while still in school as it helps them to develop a work ethic, gaining experience and building relationships for future reference. In that case, I recommend that you find a job that is relate to your study field rather than just any job. For \u00a0example, a student majoring in computer science would be much better from getting an entry level job at a software company than by making good salary at a clothing stores. The experience gaining from the software job can be excellent reference later when they graduate.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
