Success in College<\/p>\n

Success means achieving your goals, whatever they are. We all have goals, some are big, some are small but we always have certain goals in our life. Of course, they change with time as we are growing up. To students in high school, the goal could be passing the college entrance test with high score to get accepted into top university.\u00a0 To college students, the goal could be to graduate and get a good job or pursue an advanced degree at an oversea university. Some people have goal to make a lot of money and other only want to be loved and having a family. Basically, goals become our aspiration of becoming somebody or getting something that we do not have yet. It starts as a goal then it become a dream and eventually with some efforts, it materializes into reality when you succeed. Of course, without the effort it will remain as a dream and there is no success in just dreaming knowing it will never become true.<\/p>\n

To achieve your dream or to success, you must have two factors: Planning and effort. Planning is the direction we set to achieve our goals. Effort is the activities that we take to make our goal become reality. Since you all have dreams, my question is do you have plans to achieve your goals? Your plan is your map that detail a step-by-step toward achieving your goal. If your goal is to graduate and get good job then you could begin by setting your map for each year in college by identify what course to take and make sure that within a time period, you will fulfill all required courses to graduate. Once this high level map is completed than you will add more detail such as the goal for each course, the time spend for each course, the tasks that you must do for each course. Basically everything that you must do to achieve your ultimate goal: to graduate successfully.<\/p>\n

Effort is the action that you take to execute your plan. It is the physical and mental action that performs all tasks detailed in your plan. In every college, there are obstacles, there are certain temptations that will deviate you from your plan. To achieve the goals, you must overcome them by staying focus and building up the strengths that eventually make up your personality. Everybody has weaknesses, some are physically weak, other are mentally weak, some are shy, other are lazy. These characters usually develop when you are young and define your personality when you enter college but you need to change them to achieve the goals that you want. This process of changing or developing a new personality is called \u201cmaturing\u201d as you are maturing from a young person into a responsible adult. If you are physically weak, you will need to build a plan to exercise and participate in some sports it will help you overcome your physical weakness. You do not have to be a athletic but walking, light exercises, swimming do help. If you are mentally weak, you need to discipline yourself by forcing you into some good habits, reading more good books, train yourself to follow a strict regiment will strengthen your minds, the key is to set goals and follow up with some efforts.<\/p>\n

The common temptation in college is \u201cSo much freedom and so little time\u201d. Since there is no one there to tell you what to do as in high school and you fell that you are free to do whatever you want. In college, you will meet many new people, new friends. What will happen when so many young people get together? They start having party, drinking, dancing and dating and these become fun things that occur not occasionally but daily. Suddenly you forget your plan and your purpose when go to college: You are there to study, not to party. To overcome this obstacle, you need to go back to your plan: How much time do you allocate to your study? For each one hour of lecture, you will need two hours of study alone and one hour with your group \u2013 That is three hours. How many course are you taken this time? Typical students takes three to four courses per semester and it could means thirty six hours a week or else you will not do well. By understand your plan and put in your effort, you will avoid this common mistake.<\/p>\n

Another obstacle in college is \u201cNot enough sleep and so many activities\u201d. Since you have so many friends, many activities, many computer games to play, many movies to watch but you must go to class in the day time so night time is the time you spend with friends doing all these things. You go out to movies, play computer games on line, spend hours in coffee shop with friends to talk about your dream of being a hero like in a movies. Afterward, you stay up late to study and suddenly the next thing you know, it is 4:00 in the morning so you sleep for few hours and go to class. In class, you are tired so you \u201csleep a little\u201d. Later you go to the library, you are still tired so you sleep a little more, just few minutes. Of course you go out with friend again after dinner and stay up late as usual. Soon the semester is over with so many materials to study, so many tests to take. Now you do not feel college is a good choice anymore so either you quit school or find another excuse to your family. You ask your parents to allow you to change into another college but if you do not change the habit, nothing will change. The interesting fact is some students still do the same thing but expect to have different result. To overcome this obstacle, you must go back to your plan again to determine the study time required and put some effort to it. Every young people will need certain discipline and it will strengthen their character to the better and it is the process of being matured.<\/p>\n

By definition, maturity is a term used to indicate how a person responds to the circumstances or environment in an appropriate and adaptive manner. This response is a learned behavior and college is the time when you learn to be a responsible adult for your family and the society. It is the ability to base a judgment according to a view or a long term goals. It means being able to resist the urge for something immediate for the action that will benefit the person later. It is about the ability to put effort into a situation and stay with it until it is finished. The student who is constantly changing classes, changing friends, and changing schools is basically immature because he has not grown up.
