Advising students<\/p>\n

The success or failure of college students not only depend on the learning process but also the proper advising of students. For first-year students, this is critical because they require assistance not only in what field to study, what course to take, what career direction to go, but also how to \u201csurvive and do well\u201d in college environment.<\/p>\n

In the U.S and some European countries, college orientation lasts a week where students receive \u201ccollege survival\u201d trainings and career advising. In this week (usually before school officially starts) new students will receive many advices. There are meetings and discussions between new students and old students where they share experiences and make friends. There are workshops between students and people from the industry where students can ask questions about their career goals and job market perspectives. There are meetings between students\u2019 family and school officials regarding building relationship between school and family and answer any question that students\u2019 parents may have etc. Basically, before starting college, many students are well prepared and ready for the challenge. I did not see this kind of advising activity in Asia, many\u00a0 college orientation only lasts few hours or a day as schools welcome new students with speeches from school officials.<\/p>\n

Most of the top schools place lot of efforts on the advising of students. It is evidenced in their missions, goals, policy, and procedures. In these top schools, the ratio between students and professors are very close, for example 20 students per one professor. Why is it so? Because they want to make sure that their students receive the best attention and will succeed. Their logic is simple: The more students succeed, the better reputation of the school, and the best students will want to go there. This is why in the U.S. most top schools are private schools NOT state schools. If you look at Harvard, Stanford, MIT or Carnegie Mellon, they all have more applicants than they can accept so it allows them to select the best students possible. After students are accepted, there are many things the school will do to ensure that their students will succeed. Students will be assigned an academic advisor for their study and a career advisor for their preparation to enter the workforce. The ratio between students and professors is kept relatively small for better interactions, including several support activities to \u201cnurture\u201d them to make sure that they will succeed. Having the best students, having best trainings, having strong relationship between students and professors are the key factors that give these schools their reputations. Furthermore, these schools also keep a strong relationship with students even after they graduated. As many are working and moving up in their careers, they can still receive advices from their schools, their professors, and other graduated students. That is why they never forget their schools and when they became owners of companies, or senior managers they always return and hire students from their schools.<\/p>\n

In most top schools, advising student is one of three key factors for recognition and rewarded through the promotion and tenure process. Traditionally, tenure was given to professors with more published research but things has changed because the ranking of school is now focus on the number of students graduated and find jobs related to their fields. A school that has a lot of researches may NOT be the school that students want to go to, unless they want to pursue PhDs. degrees. Today, top school is ranked on the students faculty ratio (20:1 or 30:1 is the best) and schools with best industry connection where students get better job opportunity.<\/p>\n

For the school that want to be the best, the \u201cinternational recognized\u201d school, and have the name listed at the top schools ranking. My questions are: Who is responsible for the advising at your school? Is advising students an important duty in your school? Do promotions and raise in salary tie to the advising duty? Do all professors and advisors receive the same information and training across the university? Do professors and advisor understand theories of student development and have the skills to talk with students effectively? Do they have the knowledge about the job market, the industry needs to assist students in setting their career goals?<\/p>\n

Many professors believe that their job is to teach and helping students is the job of student advisors. This is NOT correct because both professors and advisors are people that students depend on to help them. Advising students must be the responsibilities of both and they must work together to fulfill this duty. Together they can advise on important study skills, give proper career direction, and increase students chances of success. As an educator, if you value student success, you must value advising.<\/p>\n
