Class discussion<\/p>\n

A professor told me: \u201cI do not like the new teaching method of having student discussion in class. They are there to learn and they should listen when I am lecturing. Allowing students to discuss in class is a waste of time as I do not see any benefits in doing it\u201d.<\/p>\n

I can understand why some people are cynical about the new teaching method as old habit is not easy to change. My question is how does a professor know whether students learn anything when he is just lecturing? How does a professor know whether students are listening, learning or sending text messages, reading emails, playing computer games in their laptops or smart phones? Teaching is NOT just lecturing but also encouraging students to learn and to acquire knowledge by any possible mean.<\/p>\n

Today most students are very active. They do NOT want to sit quietly and listen anymore. To encourage learning, you need different method. I found that students prefer class discussion and sometime online discussion after class. There are two types of student: The first type only listens to acquire ideas and when they discuss, they just want to make sure that their ideas are correct as they are learning the things that could be on the test. This type is basically the \u201csurface learner\u201d, just learn enough to pass the course. The second type engages in discussion to develop ideas or using ideas of others to improve their own thinking. They often challenge the idea, asking questions to clarify their understanding then come out with a more complete understanding. This type is really the \u201cdeep learner\u201d that have acquire the knowledge to be used whenever they need.<\/p>\n

Not all students understand the learning through class discussion. Some believe it is something professors ask them to do just to fill up time. Other think professors may not have time to prepare a lecture so they substitute by having a discussion instead. Very few would know that preparing a class discussion requires much more time and efforts than a lecture. To avoid any misunderstanding, I often explain why discussing ideas makes it easier to learn than just listen to a lecture. I always set the learning objectives, explain my expectations, and what students can accomplish after each discussion.<\/p>\n

I often start the discussion by raising a problem or question, allow some students to solve or answer then ask the class to discuss on their solution ideas. When students are discussing, I write their key ideas on the board or on my laptop connects to a projector so students can see what I wrote. I like to encourage students to challenge the ideas or the solutions so the discussion can go much in depth. In the end, students can come up with a complete understanding of the total issues. When it is over, I always give students few minutes to take notes on important ideas that came up during the discussion. To ensure that students do learn, I often ask them again in the next class and ask whether anyone has different ideas that they want to share.\u00a0To establish an orderly discussion, I clearly set rules for the class such as: Student must listen to the person who is speaking; Only one person speaks at a time; No interruption or laughing during discussion; and everyone must participate \u2013 No exception. If no one volunteer to speak, I will call each student by name.<\/p>\n

For larger size class, I ask each student to turn to a student sitting next to them to discuss for 2 minutes so everyone can express their particular idea. Afterward, each pair is grouped with another pair into a team of four to continue the discussion for another few minutes. Each team of four can be grouped into a team of eight so the discussion can turn more lively. I found that eight is the maximum size team that can still be very productive. In a final step, a representative of the team is asked to share their thoughts with the entire class and this is the beginning of class discussion among teams. This technique is effective to get quick responses from students. It allows students to offer ideas until you tell them to stop and it allows students the opportunity to learn from each others. By having team discussion, students can generate many ideas in a given amount of time. Of course, I monitors the class to ensure equal participation is taking place.<\/p>\n

In most of my course, participation grade is about 30% of total grade. By participate in class discussion, students learn about public speaking, organize things quickly, listening to others, negotiate key ideas, analyze situation and act fast, and eventually gaining more confidence in their ability to master the \u201cSoft-skills\u201d and their knowledge on the subject.<\/p>\n
