M\u1ed9t s\u1ed1 ng\u01b0\u1eddi th\u1eadm ch\u00ed c\u00f2n \u0111i xa h\u01a1n v\u00e0 mu\u1ed1n d\u1eebng vi\u1ec7c kho\u00e1n ngo\u00e0i c\u1ee7a CNTT \u0111\u1ec3 gi\u1eef vi\u1ec7c l\u00e0m trong M\u0129 v\u00e0 gi\u1ea3i quy\u1ebft v\u1ea5n \u0111\u1ec1 th\u1ea5t nghi\u1ec7p.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Tin t\u1ed1t l\u00e0nh l\u00e0 trong nh\u1eefng n\u0103m g\u1ea7n \u0111\u00e2y, \u0111\u0103ng tuy\u1ec3n v\u00e0o CNTT \u0111\u00e3 t\u0103ng l\u00ean khi nhi\u1ec1u sinh vi\u00ean \u0111ang tr\u1edf n\u00ean v\u1ee1 m\u1ed9ng v\u1edbi ngh\u1ec1 kinh doanh. Ng\u00e0y nay c\u00e1c ngh\u1ec1 t\u00e0i ch\u00ednh, ng\u00e2n h\u00e0ng c\u00f3 th\u1ea5t nghi\u1ec7p cao do kh\u1ee7ng ho\u1ea3ng t\u00e0i ch\u00ednh. Theo m\u1ed9t nghi\u00ean c\u1ee9u g\u1ea7n \u0111\u00e2y, sinh vi\u00ean t\u1ed1t nghi\u1ec7p trong nh\u1eefng l\u0129nh v\u1ef1c n\u00e0y c\u00f3 th\u1ec3 kh\u00f4ng c\u00f3 kh\u1ea3 n\u0103ng ki\u1ebfm \u0111\u01b0\u1ee3c vi\u1ec7c l\u00e0m v\u00ec cung v\u01b0\u1ee3t xa c\u1ea7u. Khi nhi\u1ec1u n\u01b0\u1edbc \u0111ang \u0111i nhanh \u0111\u1ec3 n\u1eafm l\u1ea5y \u01b0u th\u1ebf c\u1ee7a c\u01a1 h\u1ed9i n\u00e0y, n\u01b0\u1edbc \u0111i ch\u1eadm s\u1ebd b\u1ecb b\u1ecf l\u1ea1i \u0111\u1eb1ng sau.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;-English version&#8212;-<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The IT skills shortage<\/p>\n<p>For the past several years, the IT skills shortage issue was often mentioned in the U.S and it stirred up many debates. Software companies complain about not having enough skilled people to do more works and expand their business. They urge U.S Congress to change immigration laws to allow more skilled IT workers to enter and work in the U.S. However, there is also objection as some people believe that the U.S must focus on \u201cretrain\u201d unemployed workers in Information Technology (IT) and keep the jobs for its citizens. Some even go further and want to stop the outsourcing of IT to keep works in the U.S and solve the unemployment issue.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is in recent years, enrollment in IT has been increasing as more students are becoming disillusioned with business careers. Today Finance, Banking careers have the highest unemployment ever due to the financial crisis. According to a recent study, students graduate in these fields may not be able to get jobs as the supply is far exceed the demand. Most business schools reported a 43 per cent drop in students over the past three years as business degrees, including the MBA are no longer a guarantee for jobs. The study also pointed out that even enrollment in IT has increased significant but there still be a shortage because the demand is far exceed the supply. The U.S labor office reported that within the next six years, the U.S will need approximately 1.8 million software people for its fast growing industry. Of course, it is impossible to train that many people in a short time and the IT skill shortage will remain an issue.<\/p>\n<p>When the debate in the U.S is still going on, another United Nation study found that the IT skills shortage is a global issue as it also happened in Europe, Asia, and even Africa. The study found that the cause was NOT due the lack of students studying IT but the qualification of the IT graduates. The India\u2019s\u00a0National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) found that over 70% of IT graduates in India do NOT have the right skills to work in the industry. The China News also reported that recently there were several million unemployed IT graduates even its software industry has a\u00a0shortage of qualified workers. These reports has caused many technology companies to question the quality of education in their country. The study found that most IT programs are not being taught well enough at state schools because they are too slow to response to technology change. Today students are \u201ctechnology oriented\u201d, and they know more about technology than what was taught in schools. The study survey 250 colleges in 65 countries and found that most students were disappointed with their educations. They complained that most programs were focusing on theories, not practical enough and not even compare with the way they use technology in their daily lives. A student commented: \u201cWe are the generation of the Internet and Facebook but our professors come from the mainframe generation of the 60s. What can they teach us?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Personally, I think the problem is NOT with the professor but with the outmoded model of teaching. Traditional academia believe that teachers and text books are the main source of knowledge. Teachers &#8220;teach&#8221; and \u201ctransfer knowledge\u201d to students, who learn through memorization and demonstrate their knowledge in annual exams. This teaching model was invented several hundred years ago and it is still unchanged. It focuses on the teacher who is the authority to \u201cactively\u201d do the teaching. Student is to be \u201cPassive\u201d and \u201cquietly\u201d absorb whatever the teacher taught. However today students are not the same as hundred years ago. They are active, dynamic and have access to many new technologies and will not \u201cbe quiet\u201d in their learning. Today, students knows how to use computer and the Internet. Many play computer games, chat with friends, read news, send \u201cText messages\u201d everyday etc. But when they go to school, they go back in time to several hundred years ago, where they have to sit quietly and listen to teacher lecture and use chalk and blackboard to explain a concept.<\/p>\n<p>As educator, we need to rethink the model of learning and move to a collaborative model of learning such as the \u201cLearning by Doing\u201d. This concept advocates a change in the relationship between the student and teacher. In this \u201cActive learning\u201d model, students should learn ON THEIR OWN BEFORE they go to class. Classroom should be used for discussion, to clarify the materials where teacher lead the discussion and \u201ccoaching\u201d students to enrich their knowledge to solve problems. The results of this new model have been dramatic according to several studies where students learned more and produced higher quality work. By using technology, students can do research, analyze and evaluate more things than just follow textbooks.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, it takes time to transition from the passive way to the active way of learning but with globalization and the shortage of skilled workers globally, I think this is a golden opportunity for many developing countries to move fast and fill this need. Having a skilled IT workforce will bring significant benefits to the economy and create more jobs for the next generation.
