Their learning concept is to pass the course then go to the next class and eventually graduate with a degree. How do I change this old study habit and how to make them learn more?<\/p>\n

I explained: \u201cEven with the best lectures and best reading materials will not get students want to learn more if they are not motivated. The key in effective teaching is about motivation so the best way is to put more efforts in motivate students to learn rather than just focus on the lectures and reading assignments. Since different students are motivated differently, it will take time to get the whole class motivate about learning.<\/p>\n

The first thing is to define the objectives of the course to students by explain to them what they will learn from the class. Tell them what skills they will learn and how those skills will be used when they go to work after graduation. Students need to know what is expected of them both in school and later in life in order for them to stay motivated. At the first day of the class, it is important to explain the course objectives, rules, and your expectations to students so that there is no confusion about the goals that students must work towards.<\/p>\n

If students do not find a class interesting, they will not spend time to learn the material. To create the interest, the class must begin with teachers sharing their passion about the subject. I often begin with a short story to share with students on how I became interested in the field, what this class means to me, and how it relate to the overall education goals. After that I ask each student to give a brief statement on why they take the class as well as their expectations and what they want to learn from the course. This provides a lot of information about students and indicates which students can be asked to share, or explain something in class. The best ways to get your students motivated is to share your enthusiasm. When you are excited about teaching, they will be much more excited about learning.<\/p>\n

Some teachers like to warn students about consequences of their actions in class. Of course, students know that they must study else they will fail but I often avoid warning or threatening. I like to create a supportive environment by affirm my belief in students\u2019 abilities to learn. I often said: \u201cI am sure you all can do well in this course, you are all smart so just put in your time then you will do well.\u201d Students will be motivated to learn more if they know they can do well rather than cannot.<\/p>\n

Traditional classroom requires students to sit quiet at their desks all the time to listen to teachers. It can make the class seem boring and rigid. To keep their interest in the subject matter, I often change the atmosphere by inviting industry speakers to come in and give students some advices, or asking graduates who are now working in the industry to share their experiences with current students. When I receive emails from former students, I send them to the whole class and spend time to discuss about the experiences Different speakers and experience sharing often helps students to stay motivated.<\/p>\n

Since not all students will respond to the lectures in the same way. I often ask students to bring some interesting technical articles that they read to class for discussions. Students like to learn from these examples and it encourages them to read extra articles. By having them bring extra articles to class and present to the class, it motivate them to read more and improve their presentation skills. By having them present in class give them a sense of accomplishing and motivate others. Most students see these \u201cStudent\u2019s lecture\u201d as a privilege rather than a burden and often work hard to ensure that they are meeting expectations. By having them take turns to present in class, they feel important and motivate to learn more.<\/p>\n

Contradict to some beliefs; competition in the classroom is not a bad thing. It often motivates students to try harder and work to excel. I like to assign work to teams to foster a spirit of competition in my class. The interaction can get them excited about things in the classroom and students can motivate one another to reach a goal. Of course I have to ensure that groups are balanced as some students are not really doing more work than others.<\/p>\n

There is nothing better to motivate students than to praise them when they do good work. Every student wants recognition and praise so I am very careful with any criticism but never stop praising them. Students want to succeed; they just need help figuring out what they need to do in order to be more successful. Of course, in every class there are some who are not doing well and they often worry too much. For these students, I always let them know that struggling with a subject is not as bad as they think. Sometime they need to change their study habit; sometime they may need extra tutorials.<\/p>\n

Students who fell behind in class often feel frustrated and blame themselves. In these situations, I would spend time with them to learn what went wrong and how they can improve. Figuring out a way to get them back on track can help them to stay motivated to work hard. I often find that they feel so overwhelmed by so many materials that they cannot keep up and want to quit.
